Objective: To study the efficacy and safety of inulin in the treatment of functional constipation in children. Methods: 246 children with functional constipation(FC)who were treated in pediatrics department of our hospital from January 2018 to October 2018 were studied.246 FC cases were divided into infant group(136 cases aged 3 months to 4 years)and children group(110 cases aged 4 to 14 years). The infant group was randomly divided into observation group(68 cases)and control group(68 cases). The children group was randomly divided into inulin group(55 cases)and control group(55 cases). On the basis of comprehensive treatment, children in the infant group and the control group were treated with lactulose orally, while those in the observation group were treated with inulin orally. To evaluate the clinical efficacy of each group of children;before and after treatment, fresh stool samples were collected to detect intestinal flora, and serum intestinal neurotransmitter indicators [nitric oxide(NO),neuropeptide Y(NPY),somatostatin(SS)].All groups of children were followed up for 3 months to observe the recurrence rate;at the same time, the incidence of adverse reactions was observed and counted.Results:1.Infant group. In terms of total effective rate of clinical treatment, the observation group and the control group were 95.58% and 75%,respectively.The inulin group was higher than the control group(P<0.05).In terms of intestinal flora, the increase of anaerobic Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in inulin group was greater than that in control group(P<0.05),and the decrease of Aerobic Enterobacter and Enterococcus was greater than that in control group(P<0.05).On the average serum NO,NPY and SS indexes, after treatment, the decreases of each index in inulin group were greater than those in control group(P<0.05).In terms of recurrence rate, the recurrence rate of inulin group was 4.41%(3/68),while that of control group was 13.24%(9/68),which was lower than that of control group(P<0.05).In the total incidence of adverse reactions, inulin group and control group were 4.41% and 20.58% respectively, and inulin group was lower than control group(P<0.05).2.Children group. The total effective rate of inulin group and control group was 96.36% and 80%,respectively.The inulin group was higher than the control group(P<0.05).In terms of intestinal flora, the increase of anaerobic Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in inulin group was greater than that in control group(P<0.05),and the decrease of Aerobic Enterobacter and Enterococcus was greater than that in control group(P<0.05).On the average serum NO,NPY and SS indexes, after treatment, the decreases of each index in inulin group were greater than those in control group(P<0.05).In terms of recurrence rate, the observation group was 7.27%(4/55),the control group was 20%(11/55),and the inulin group was lower than the control group(P<0.05).In the total incidence of adverse reactions, inulin group and control group were 9.10% and 23.64% respectively, and inulin group was lower than control group(P<0.05).
