ObjectiveTo study the clinical effect of the treatment of functional constipation(excessive constipation)in children by belly holding method in combination with routine massage method, and to compare the difference of clinical efficacy between the two groups as compared with routine massage group.MethodsA total of 112 children who met the diagnostic criteria and inclusion criteria of functional constipation in children were enrolled in this study. They were randomly divided into the treatment group and control group after signing the informed consent form. Finally, there were 50 patients(n=50)were screened and selected into the treatment group and 50 patients(n=50)into the control group according to the exclusion and falling off criteria. The patients in the treatment group were treated with belly holding method in combination with routine massage method, while those in the control group were treated with the routine massage method alone. After 2 courses of treatment, the clinical efficacy was observed and evaluated between the two groups.Results1.One hundred of patients completed this study.2.The difference in sex, age, course of disease, scores of primary symptoms and secondary symptoms prior treatment were not statistically significant(P>0.05)between the treatment group and control group.3.Comparisons of clinical efficacy:3.1 Total effective rate:The study results showed that the methods were effective in both the treatment group and control group in the treatment of functional constipation(excessive constipation)in children. The response rate of clinical efficacy was 92%and the response rate of symptom efficacy was 88%in the treatment group; The response rate of clinical efficacy was 78%and the response rate of symptom efficacy was 72%in the control group.3.2 Comparisons of primary symptoms:(1)Intra-group comparison:The total scores of primary symptoms, defecation interval, defecation difficulty level and fecal character were improved in the treatment group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The scores of primary symptoms, defecation interval, defecation difficulty level and fecal character were improved in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).(2)Comparison among groups:The scores of primary symptoms, defecation interval, defecation difficulty level and fecal character were improved, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).3.3 Comparisons of secondary symptoms:(1)Intra-group comparison:The scores of secondary symptoms, abdominal distension, anorexia, halitosis, dysphoria, feverishness in palms and soles and yellow urine were improved in the treatment group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05);The symptom of dry mouth was improved in the treatment group, and the difference was not statistically significant(P<0.05).The scores of secondary symptoms, abdominal distension, anorexia, halitosis, feverishness in palms and soles and yellow urine were improved in the control group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05);The symptoms of dry mouth and dysphoria were improved in the control group, and the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).(2)Comparison among groups:The scores of secondary symptoms, abdominal distension and anorexia were improved, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05).The symptoms of halitosis, dysphoria, feverishness in palms and soles and yellow urine and dry mouth were improved, and the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).ConclusionThe efficacy of belly holding method in combination with routine massage method was significant in the treatment of functional constipation(solid constipation)in children. The efficacy of belly holding method in improving the primary symptoms(defecation interval, defecation difficulty level and fecal character)and secondary syndromes(abdominal distension and anorexia)of functional constipation in children was superior to that of routine massage method.
