ObjectiveTo describe the status of resilience among parents of children with cerebral palsy(CP)and analyze its influential factors to provide theoretical basis for the intervention to those parents so as to promote and maintain their physical and mental health.MethodsFrom July 2017 to December 2017,160 parents of children with cerebral palsy were recruited conveniently in the rehabilitation center of a local children hospital in Wuhan.Data on their general information,resilience,coping,self-efficacy,and condition questionnaire, and personality traits were collected by questionnaires, including the basic information survey, resilience scale, simple coping scale, general self-efficacy scale, and the NEO Five-Factor Inventory(NEO-FFI).EpiData 3.1was used for data entry and sorting.SPSS 22.0 was used for data analysis.Data were descripted as mean±standard deviation and/or percentage. The t-test and One-Way ANOVA were used to analyze the effects of the basic information on resilience.Pearson correlation was used to analyze the relationship among variables.Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the factors contributing to resilience.Results(1)The overall resilience score was(58.27±13.74)The scores of each dimension from high to low were:(20.13±5.27)for ability,(15.69±4.18)for endure negative emotions,(11.9±3.58)for accept change,(6.52±2.11)for control,and(4.03±1.44)for spirit support.(2)Different basic information variables, such as gender, education level, family economic status, the amount of knowledge of CP,age of children with CP,CP duration, and cumulative time of rehabilitation training, had significant impacts on the level of resilience among parents of children with CP.(3)Significant relationships among coping style,self-efficacy,personality and resilience in parents of children with CP were found.(1)The overall resilience and each dimension were significantly correlated with the overall coping style and positive coping sub-dimension(P<0.01),while resilience and each dimensions scores had no correlation with negative coping style(P>0.05);(2)The overall resilience and its four subscales, including ability, endure negative emotion, accept changes, control were all significantly correlated with NEO Five-Factor Inventory scores and its four sub-dimensions,including extraversion, agreeableness, responsibility, and openness(P<0.01).The overall resilience and each dimension scores were negatively correlated with the neurologic dimension of the NEO Five-Factor Inventory(P<0.05).The resilience of spirit support dimension and NEO Five-Factor Inventory scores, extraversion, agreeableness, responsibility and openness had no statistical significance(P>0.05);(3)The resilience and its sub-dimensions had positive correlation with general self-efficacy(P<0.01).(4)The main predictors of resilience of parents of children with CP were self-efficacy,positive coping and the amount of knowledge of CP.All these factors had positive predictive effect and explained 47.4% of the total variation in resilience.Conclusions(1)The resilience level of parents of children with CP was low;(2)There were significant differences in resilience of parents of children with CP in different gender, educational level, family income, cerebral palsy related knowledge amount, patient age, disease duration, the cumulative rehabilitation training time;(3)The positive coping style, general self-efficacy,NEO Five-Factor Inventory total score and each dimension were related to the resilience of parents of children with CP,while the resilience score and each dimension were positively correlated to total score of coping style and coping style dimensions. The total score of resilience, ability, endure negative emotion, accept changes, control four dimensions were all significantly correlated with NEO Five-Factor Inventory scores and extraversion, agreeableness, responsibility and openness four dimensions, the resilience and each dimension were positively correlated to general self-efficacy.The total score of resilience and each dimension scores were negatively correlated with the neurologic dimension of the NEO Five-Factor Inventory.(4)The predictors of resilience in parents of children with CP were self-efficacy,positive coping, and cerebral palsy related knowledge.
