Personality Traits And Coping Styles Of Parents Of Patients With Schizophrenia

ObjectiveTo compare the personality traits and coping styles between the parents of the patients with Schizophrenia with the control subjects,and to explore the relationship between the personality traits and copying styles in parents of the patients with Schizophrenia.MethodsChinese Big Five Personality Inventory brief version(CBF-PI-B),and coping style questionnaire(CSQ)were respectively used to assess the general conditions,personality dimensions and coping styles of 60 parents of the patients with Schizophrenia and 60 healthy controls,and to analyze the relevance between the personality traits and copying styles in parents of the patients with Schizophrenia.Results1.Parents of the patients with Schizophrenia significantly differed from normal control subjects on neuroticism and extraversion.Parents of the patients with Schizophrenia showed statistically significant lower levels of Extraversion and higher levels of Neuroticism than healthy unrelated controls(P<0.01 for two tests).2.The scores of problem-solving and resort of parents of the patients with Schizophrenia were significantly lower than that of controls,while avoidance,illusion and self-blame scores were significantly lower than normal control subjects(P<0.01 for two tests).3.For parents of the patients with Schizophrenia,Neuroticism was positively associated with self-blame,illusion,avoidance and rationalization scales(P<0.05;P<0.01),while Neuroticism was inversely associated with problem-solving(P<0.05);Conscientiousness was inversely associated with illusion scale(P<0.05).Additionally,Openness was positively associated with problem-solving,resort scales(P<0.01)and Extraversion with resort scale(P<0.05).Conclusion1.Compared with healthy controls,Parents of patients with schizophrenia showed higher neuroticism and lower extraversion.2.When coping with life stressors,parents of patients with schizophrenia are more inclined to adopt immature coping styles such as avoidance,illusion and self-blame than healthy unrelated controls.3.There is a certain correlation between the personality traits and coping styles of parents of patients with schizophrenia,coping styles of parents of patients with schizophrenia may be affected by their personality traits,reasonable and effective interventions should be promptly applied to intervene in the immature coping styles of parents of patients with schizophrenia in time,which is not only beneficial to their mental health,but also to the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with schizophrenia.
