Objective : To investigate the clinical significance of serum sphingomyelin levels in patients with anterior circulation atherosclerotic cerebral infarctionMetholds : A total of 61 patients with acute anterior circulation atherosclerotic cerebral infarction with less than 72 hours were randomly selected.Besides,62 patients with atherosclerosis were selected and another 60 healthy people were assigned as control group.Serum sphingomyelin levels were determined in patients of three groups.Meanwhile, patients in the acute anterior circulation atherosclerotic cerebral infarction group were further divided into three different levels according to the NIHSS score, including mild cerebral infarction(0-4points),moderate cerebral infarction(5-15 points),and severe cerebral infarction(>15 points). Moreover, the serum sphingomyelin levels were analyzed and compared between the acute anterior circulation atherosclerotic cerebral infarction group and the control group as well as among different degrees of acute anterior circulation atherosclerotic cerebral infarction.Results:(1)Serum sphingomyelin levels were significantly increased inpatients with acute anterior circulation atherosclerotic cerebral infarction in cerebral infarction group and atherosclerosis group(p<0.05).(2)Serum sphingomyelin levels were significantly enhanced in patients with atherosclerosis than healthy patients(p<0.05).(3)NIHSS score was positively correlated with acute anterior circulation atherosclerotic cerebral infarction volume, with correlation coefficient of R=0.758(p<0.05),indicating that NIHSS was significantly correlated with cerebral infarction volume. Thus,it is reasonable to utilize NIHSS score to assess the degree of cerebral infarction.(4)There was no significant differences between the patients with different degrees of acute anterior circulation atherosclerotic cerebral infarction(p=0.417,p>0.05).Afterwards,pairwise comparison was performed of serum sphingomyelin levels in the three groups, which showed no statistical significance(p>0.05),suggesting that serum sphingomyelin levels were not significantly different among different degrees of cerebral infarction. Conclusion : Serum sphingomyelin might just be a risk factor to predict acute anterior circulation atherosclerotic cerebral infarction instead of the reflection of the degree.
