Study On Reliability,Validity Of The Chinese Version Of Body Image In Pregnancy Scale

Objectives:The present study explored the body image experience of maternal women through qualitative interviews.Based on the results,the expert group converted Body Image in Pregnancy Scale(BIPS)into Chinese and cross-cultural adaptation,and tested reliability and validity of the Chinese version.Finally,the Chinese version of BIPS was initially constructed.The aim of the study was to initially form a suitable BIPS for pregnant women in our country,to quantify the evaluation of the body image among pregnant women,to improve the medical staff's attention on body image of pregnant women,to provide reference for future research.Methods:1.In this study,phenomenological research method was used to conduct semi-structured in-depth interviews with 18 pregnant women in the obstetrics department of a third-grade hospital in Changchun City.Colaizzi's seven-step analysis method was used to analyze the recording data of interview.Combined with the qualitative research results,researchers and experts conducted pre-translation,back translation,proofread,cultural adaptation,scale content validity evaluation and pre-test on the English version of BIPS,to form a tentative Chinese version of BIPS.2.By means of convenient sampling,338 pregnant women who received outpatient examinations or admitted to a third-grade a hospital in Changchun were selected to fill out general conditions questionnaire and the tentative Chinese version of BIPS.With Epidata data entry,the data was exported to Excel.After inspection and verification,researchers imported the data into SPSS23.0 and Amos21.0 software for data analysis,using frequency,composition ratio,mean,standard deviation to describe the general information of subjects.Using the structure validity composed of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis adjusted the items of Chinese tentative version of BIPS,to form the final Chinese version of BIPS.Internalconsistency and retest reliability were used to test the validity and reliability of the final Chinese version of BIPS.Results:1.Topics extracted from qualitative data include: understanding of body image disturbance,factors affecting body image disturbance,and expectations of future body image disturbance.Based on the results of the qualitative study,BIPS was supplemented 10 items including maternal and child health,dissatisfaction with various parts of the body,stretch marks,breastfeeding and postpartum weight retention,and the influence of opinions among surrounding people,and revised 5items,deleted 7 items.There was no modification after the pre-investigation,and the tentative Chinese version of BIPS with 39 items was formed.2.Investigating 338 pregnant women with the tentative Chinese version of BIPS tested the reliability and validity,and the Chinese version of BIPS was preliminarily formed.Based on the exploratory factor analysis,35 projects were identified and divided into 9 subscales,explaining a total variance of 68%.Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the Chinese version of BIPS is a good model for the body image of pregnant women.The Chinese version of BIPS has good internal consistency reliability and test-retest reliability,which are 0.861 and 0.986,respectively.Obesity and higher income levels are sensitive factors for the scale.Conclusions:1.Through qualitative research to explore the maternal experience of body image disturbance,researchers summarized the comprehension,influencing factors and future expectations of body image disturbance in Chinese pregnant women.The research had shown that they needed the support and care of spouses,family,friends,and medical staff's guidance.Meanwhile the qualitative study provided theoretical basis for the localization and cultural adaptation of BIPS scale.2.Quantitative research results proved the Chinese version of BIPS was an effective and reliable evaluation tool for measuring body image disturbance of pregnant women,including 9 dimensions and 35 items,which has good reliability and validity.And this scale provided effective measuring tools and theoretical basis forfuture investigation and intervention research of body image among pregnant women.
