Objective: To investigate the electromyography changes of masticatory muscle s at different periods before and after the repair of Kennedy? dentition defect.Me thods:34bilateral distal-extension partially edentulous patients were randomly select ed respectively, and be detected before restoration and repair the new dentures, one month, three months and six months, the electromyography of masseter muscle,an terior temporalmuscle, sternocleidomastoid muscle, anterior digastrics muscle at the m andibular postural position and during the maximum clenching in intercuspal positi on,recording the electromyography amplitudes, calculate the average amplitude of e lectromyography of masticatory muscles and asymmetry index, and the results wer e repeated measures analysis of variance.Results:(1)The electromyography amplitu de of masseter muscle and anterior temporalmuscle at mandibular postural position in new dentures and after a month restoration had significant difference than bef ore restoration(P<0.05),three months after the repair above was not statistically significant(P>0.05),anterior digastrics muscle and sternocleidomastoid muscle are no significant meaning(P>0.05);(2)The electromyography amplitude ofmasseter m uscle, anterior temporalmuscle, anterior digastrics muscle and sternocleidomastoid mu scle at intercuspal position in each period after denture repair was significant diffe rence than before restoration(P<0.05);(3)The asymmetry index of masseter muscle and anterior temporal muscle at mandibular postural position and intercuspal posit ion in each period after denture repair was significant difference than before resto ration(P<0.05),the asymmetry index of sternocleidomastoid muscle at intercuspal position in each period after denture repair was significant difference than before re storation(P<0.05).Conclusion: After prosthetic rehabilitation, the masticatory functi on of the patients with Kennedy? dentition defect has been improved significantly than before, but the patients need at least three months to adapt the dentures.
