OBJECTIVE:To determine whether root canal treatment in a single visit or multiple visits makes any difference in term of postoperative pain.METHODS:We searched Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials,MEDLINE/Pub Med,EMbase,CBM,CNKI and Wan Fang Data electronic databases until September 26,2017,without language restriction. We searched randomized controlled trials about the postoperative pain of single versus multiple visits for endodontic treatment.Literature screening, quality assessment and data extraction were performed by two reviewers independently according to the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions.meta-analysis was performed for the results of homogeneous studies by Rev Man5.3 software.RESULTS:Seventeen randomized controlled trials were included. We found incidence of immediate postoperative pain after 48 h was not significantly different between single and multiple-visit RCT(RR 0.97,95% CI 0.68 to 1.38,P=0.85),this meta-analysis showed low heterogeneity(?~2=1.68,P=0.43,I~2=0%).Incidence of immediate postoperative pain after 72 h in vital teeth(RR 1.20,95% CI 0.90 to 1.59,P=0.21)with low heterogeneity(?~2=5.33,P=0.15,I~2=44%)and in necrotic teeth(RR0.92,95% CI 0.65 to 1.32,P=0.66)with low heterogeneity(?~2=6.32,P=0.18,I~2=37%)were not significantly different between single and multiple-visit RCT.People undergoing RCT in a single visit were more likely to use painkillers than those receiving treatment over multiple visit(RR 2.29,95% CI 1.50 to 3.50,P=0.0001))with low heterogeneity(?~2=1.74,P=0.42,I~2=0%).CONCLUSION:In the case of appropriate medications, single and multiple visits showed similar postoperative pain of endodontic treatment. However,in terms of time and convenience, for both patients and dentists, single visit takes greater advantage.
