Schistosomiasis Control In Suzhou Area(1950-1990)

Schistosomiasis is one of the local infectious diseases that caused great harm to the society because of its widespread epidemic in China in the 20th century.the intermediate carrier of schistosomiasis transmission is Oncomelania snails in water.As a result,Suzhou,a water town with dense river networks,has become a serious disaster area for schistosomiasis and has caused serious threats and damages to the local population,quality and economic development.This paper analyzes the development and changes of schistosomiasis control strategies and effects in different historical periods in Suzhou area from 1950 to 1990,and then analyzes the reasons why schistosomiasis epidemic is serious and schistosomiasis control effect is considerable in Suzhou area.It reveals how the Chinese people play a role in the issues related to national economy and people’s livelihood with the help of the socialist system in the process of exploring the socialist road construction with Chinese characteristics.With unprecedented concentration of power,rapid decision-making,rapid mobilization,and extensive mobilization,the schistosomiasis control work was carried out by the whole party,the whole people’s mobilization,and the whole society’s input.the rapid achievements of the schistosomiasis control in Suzhou in the 1950s reflect the characteristics of this system.However,it cannot be denied that this highly centralized administrative power to carry out schistosomiasis control work in the form of campaigns and general assembly wars certainly has the advantages of rapid decision-making,rapid mobilization,rapid concentration and quick results.however,if the top-level design is wrong,the mistakes in rapid decision-making will also expand rapidly,resulting in serious losses.the detours taken by Suzhou’s schistosomiasis control work during the great leap forward and the cultural revolution precisely illustrate this point.Due to its lack of scientific argumentation,it is often unable to endure.in particular,the government’s financial and human resources have certain limitations.within a period of time,it can achieve immediate results by concentrating all the government resources to deal with outstanding problems in a particular field.However,it is impossible for the government to concentrate all its resources in a certain field for a long time.if the government lacks detailed planning and deployment when shifting its focus,it may cause the work results already achieved in this field to repeat or even regress.After the reform and opening up,the anti-schistosomiasis work in Suzhou abandoned the form of the general assembly campaign and adopted several methods of modernization,specialization and marketization,which achieved remarkable results.this also strongly shows that the socialist system has the vitality of self-reform,perfection and development.
