From "Conquer" To "Respect"

This paper is a systematic exploration of the schistosomiasis-preventionstrategies in Jiangxi province since1949. Generally, the prevention prioritiesunderwent three stages from “extinction of oncomelania”, to “synchronical treatmentof human and animals” and to “control of sources of infection”. The shifts reflect theParty and the Government’s increasingly rational attitudes toward the naturalenvironment in the prevention: from “conquering” the environment to“compromising” it and to now consciously “respecting” it. Nevertheless, the presentstrategy is still efficient to limited extent and unable to fully eradicate the disease. Theextinction of schistosomiasis relies on two possibilities: social progress and medicaltechnology development.
