ObjectiveTo study the relationship between tibial varus, valgus deformity and severe knee osteoarthritis.Methods42 cases with 51 knees receiving total knee arthroplasty due to severe osteoarthritis(osteoarthritis group)were retrospectively explored from August 2014 to August 2017 in our hospital. The median age was 59 years(age 43 to 82 years).Meanwhile, the normal controls of 27 cases with 54 knees were collected concurrently from the radiology department. The median age was 38 years(age 29 to51 years). The tibial plateau varus angle was measured in two groups and when tibial plateau varus angle was > 9°,varus deformity was recognized;and when <-9°,valgus deformity was identified. The tibial plateau varus angle and the proportion of tibial varus and valgus deformity between groups were analysed.ResultsThe proportion of varus deformity in the osteoarthritis group was higher thanthat in the control group(P < 0.05),and there was no significant difference in valgus deformity(P > 0.05).The difference of the degree for tibial varus and valgus deformity was not significant(P>0.05).ConclusionSevere osteoarthritis is correlated with tibial varus deformity, but not with the severity of tibial varus.Severe osteoarthritis is not associated with tibial valgus.
