Factors Influencing Nursing Students' Gerontological Nursing Career Motivation

Objective:The research is to know about the nursing students' gerontological nursing career motivation.To investigate the influencing factors of nursing students'gerontological nursing career motivation.Therefore,the corresponding intervention measures for nursing educators should be developed to provide reference basis for improving the level of gerontological nursing career motivation of nursing students.Methods:This study is an investigation research,using convenience sampling method,Three schools were selected to conduct the questionnaire survey.The research instruments have Self-designed general information questionnaire,Gerontological Nursing Career Motivation questionnaire,Geriatrics Attitude Scale,Simplification of The Big Five Inventory were used to this study.Data were analyzed by SPSS 19.0.Results:(1)Total score of gerontological nursing career motivation of nursing students was(62.09±11.14).The total score of gerontological nursing career motivation-value of nursing students was(43.74±7.99).The Total score of gerontological nursing career motivation-expectancy of nursing students was(18.34±4.11).and the entries average of each dimension score were interest(3.58±0.70),cost(3.19±0.83),practicability(3.09±0.73),and importance(2.77±0.74)in the descending order.(2)Students who were lived with older people together at home,who was taken care of by grandparents as a child,had a close relationship with older people,had experience of taking care of elderly,whose parents' attitude towards older people were good demonstrated significantly higher motivation in gerontological nursing(P<0.05).(3)The score of geriatric attitude was(3.66±0.42).The Big five personality traits of nursing students from high to low was agreeableness(3.76±0.57),conscientiousness(3.65±0.67),extraversion(3.36±0.75),openness(3.28±0.58),neuroticism(2.67±0.81),Gerontological nursing career motivation of nursing students positively correlated with Elderly medical attitude,the Big five personality traits,and agreeableness,openness,conscientiousness(P<0.01).Which negatively correlated with neuroticism(P<0.01).(4)Multiple linear regression showed that the influence factors of gerontological nursing career motivation-value were the elderly medical attitude,neuroticism,agreeableness and openness,whether to have the experience of caring for the elderly,whether to optimistic about the development prospect of geriatric nursing.Six variables accounted for 37.0%of the variation.The influence factors of gerontological nursing career motivation-expectancy were the elderly medical attitude,neuroticism,agreeableness,extraversion,conscientiousness,whether to optimistic about the development prospect of geriatric nursing,whether to have the experience of caring for the elderly,whether have studied the Aged Care during the period of school.Eight variables accounted for 35.5%of the variation.Conclusions:(1)the nursing students' gerontological nursing career motivation is at a moderate level.(2)The influence factors of gerontological nursing career motivation-value were the elderly medical attitude,neuroticism,agreeableness and openness,whether to have the experience of caring for the elderly,whether to optimistic about the development prospect of geriatric nursing.The influence factors of gerontological nursing career motivation-expectancy were the elderly medical attitude,neuroticism,agreeableness,extraversion,conscientiousness,whether to optimistic about the development prospect of geriatric nursing,whether to have the experience of caring for the elderly,whether have studied the Aged Care during the period of school.(3)Nursing education workers can cultivate the positive attitude of nursing students to elderly medical care,improve the personality traits of nursing students,and improve the motivation of nursing care for the aged.
