Objective: Hypertension is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease.Numerous hypertensive patients do not have their clinical symptoms under control and it is imperative that new avenues to treat or prevent high blood pressure in these patients are developed.More recently, hypertension has also become recognized as an immune condition and accumulating evidence suggests that neuroendocrine-immunoregulatory network can exert an important action in blood pressure regulation. As one of the most important parts in complementary and alternative therapies, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)is regularly advocated for lowering elevated blood pressure by improving function of neuronendocrine immunomodulation. In this paper, the clinical efficacy of Ziyin Qianyang recipe improved according to differentiation of symptoms was explored in treating essential hypertension with a focus on neuroendocrine-immunoregulatory network. Methods: 71 patients with essential hypertension were randomly divided into study and control groups.35 patients in control group were treated with losartan potassium tablets, and 36 patients in study group were additionally treated with traditional Chinese medicine. They were treated for 2 weeks as a course and 8 weeks in all.Quantitative criteria of TCM symptom score and blood lipids were employed in the evaluation of the patients performed before treatment and after treatment. The levels of interleukin-6(IL-6),tumor necrosis factor-?(TNF-?),interleukin-10(IL-10)and Angiotensin ?(Ang ?)were measured by enzyme linked immune sandwich assay. All analyses were performed with the SPSS software version 20.0.A two-sided p-value of less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Results: Compared with control group, the diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure were decreased significantly(P<0.05),and the total antihypertensive efficacy was increased significantly in study group after treatment(P<0.05).Compared with control group, clinical symptoms and blood lipids were improved to a variable extent in study group after treatment(P<0.05 or P<0.01).Compared with control group, the levels of Ang ?,IL-6 and TNF-? were decreased significantly(P<0.01),and the level of IL-10 was increased significantly in study group after treatment(P<0.01).Conclusion: Ziyin Qianyang recipe improved according to differentiation of symptoms was proved to be effective in improving blood pressure and clinical symptoms in patients with essential hypertension via regulating neuroendocrine-immunoregulatory network. These findings could serve as a reference for healthcare providers,in helping to establish more effective therapeutic interventions to improve the prognosis of patients with essential hypertension.Treatment based on syndrome differentiation from disease appears to be superior in medical values and effectiveness, but further evaluation and interest are needed to make advancement for treatment of hypertension in the future. The development of traditional Chinese medicine for hypertension will be full of challenge and opportunity, but we have full confidence when more evidence on the treatment is established.
