Hydatid disease, also called cystic echinococcosis(CE),is a serious zoonotic parasitic disease caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus which infects humans and livestock such as sheep and callte.Among all the intermediate hosts, sheep and yaks are most susceptible to infection. The adult worm parasitizes the small intestine of canids, such as dog and wolf.CE is an important public health issue in all over the world. In China,Sichuan province is one of the most prevalent areas.CE has caused serious economic losses to animal husbandry and damage to human health,it also has adverse effects on the development in farming and pastoral areas. In recent years, under the joint efforts of the national and local veterinary departments, remarkable results have been achieved in the prevention and control of echinococcosis in Sichuan. However, there is still a long way to prevent and control this disease in northwestern pastoral areas in Sichuan such as Ganzi and Aba.Therefore, represented by Shiqu County, epidemiological investigation of CE in different ages, different sex, differenct altitudes Yak has been carried out. This measure is conducive to the prevention and control of echinococcosis in Sichuan. In our study, the distribution and epidemiological characteristics of E.granulosus in yaks were investigated to provide the basic data for prevention and treatment of CE in Shiqu,Sichuan.Serum samples of yaks were random selected and the antibody against CE was measured by ELISA.The results showed that: 1)in Shiqu,17.73% of 2047 yak serum samples were detected as CE positive.Among them,19.05% of male yak serum samples were detected as CE positive, while 15.72% of female yak serum samples were detected as CE positive.2)CE positive rate of yaks at 4030-5000 meters above sea level was 5.58%,while CE positive rate of yaks at 3800-4000 meters above sea level was 29.858%(P<0.05).3)9.29% yaks between 1-2 years old were detected as CE positive,20.12% yaks between3-5 years old were detected as CE positive and 14.59% yaks above 6 years old were detected as CE positive. As a result,CE positive of yaks was very high, which wasdemonstrated that yaks might play important roles in prevalence of echinococcosis in Shiqu,Sichuan. In this research,ELISA was used to detect the CE specific antibody in yaks to demonstrated the distribution and epidemiological characteristics of E.granulosus.It was benefit for providing the basic date for prevention and treatment of CE in yaks.
