Snakes and frogs are important intermediate hosts for Spirometra erinaceieuropaei,and play an important role in human sparganosis.In order to maintain public health security in our province,to promote a healthy development of snake and frog breeding industry and to protect snake and frog population in the wild,this study focuses on spargana infection surveillance of snake and frog,public health risk assessment,molecular biology identification,and popularization and application of control measures.The main results are as follows:(1)Spargana infection investigation.We examined a total of 694 snakes from 16 species,and the infection rate was 46.1%(320/694).The number of spargana found on each snake varied from 0 to 213.And the worms were mostly between 9 to 20 cm in length,some individuals could reach 33.5 cm.On the other hand,the infection rate of frogs was 15.5%(272/1 759).The number of spargana found on each frog varied from 0 to 41.And the worms were mostly between 5 to 10 cm,some could reach 16.8 cm.(2)Public health risk assessment.We have concluded the people with the following behaviors are at high risk of human sparganosis: One is using raw snake or frog meat or skin to treat disease;Second,eating uncooked snake or frog meat;Third,drinking unboiled water(from rivers,lakes or reservoirs).(3)Studying and Establishing human sparganosis prevention and control measures and their popularization and application.Base on the lifespan of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei and combined with human,snakes and frogs factors in its contagion cycle,we have made comprehensive controling measures for human,snakes and frogs.We have also convinced provincial administration of forestry to include the human sparganosis from wild-caught snake and frog into < The Catalog of Key Wildlife Diseases and Pathogens of Guangdong Province>in 2014.Reports of human sparganosis are seen in news paper and other mass media,guiding the public to healthier life style.The prevention and control measures has been successfully introduced in several snake farms,decreasing the infection rate from 30%~50% to below 8%.Snake birth rate has been rasied by 10~20%,and snake growth rate has been raised by morethan 10%.Due to the decrease of labor cost and the growth of production,the sales have increasd by 192.78 million RMB,and the profits have increased by 134.94 million RMB in the five demonstration farms during 2013 and 2015.Have face to face discussion with over 300 snake farm owners on snake breeding technology in an exchange conference in Guangxi Province. |
