Hang-Jiang Railway runs from Hangzhou in the east to Yushan in the west.It was built in 1930 and the whole line opened to traffic in 1933.After the establishment of Nanjing National Government,Hang-Jiang Railway was independently designed、built and operated by the Chinese people organized by the Zhejiang government.Taking original literatures of the Republic of China as the main reference materials,this thesis investigates the preparation,design,construction and operation in order to know the specific situation and characteristics of Hang-Jiang Railway,which is divided into three parts.The first part discusses the preparation of railway construction,including construction background and reasons,fund-raising,personnel arrangement and route measurement process.The Hang-jiang railway was proposed by Zhang Jingjiang,the chairman of Zhejiang government.The main purpose of the construction is to develop the transportation of Zhejiang and to seek the balance of economic development.In terms of funds,no foreign debt has been borrowed.Money was raised by government and issued construction bonds at the same time,the insufficient was borrowed by domestic banks.Led by chief engineer Du Zhenyuan,the railway was built entirely by Chinese engineers,young technicians and railway workers.During the establishment of railway bureau,a large number of talents were recruited,and all the staff has working experience for various railways in China.The railway route was surveyed many times.The final route,compared with the route which was rugged,was avoided huge bridges,tunnels construction and expensive costs.The most important was to consider the development of route connection with surrounding areas.It can be said that the final route is very scientific.The second part discusses the construction work,including the preliminary material preparation,engineering design and construction process,as well as the railway bridge erection.The foundation and the superstructure are designed according to different standards.Hang-Jiang Railway design is different from other railways is that it created a new design for the combination of rail weight and gauge,that is,35-pound light rail was used while using the standard gauge that should have been used with heavy rails.This design was made in consideration of the actual situation,which was the first in China at that time.About bridge erection,due to the shortage of funds,according to different terrains and priorities,there are three types of bridge buildings: permanent,semi-permanent and temporary.The third part discusses the operation and impact of railway.After the opening of the railway,the railway bureau has been constantly adjusting its management model and business strategy,and implementing commercial management model in order to meet the needs of transportation,attracts more people to choose Hang-Jiang Railway,and enhance its competitiveness.By collating and analyzing the original historical references,this thesis draws the following conclusions: First,the Hang-Jiang Railway is different from most domestic railways.Secondly,the light railway design and overall construction plan are the keys to successful construction.Furthermore,the operation strategy focus on commercialization and provide convenience to people guarantees a steady increase of passenger and cargo revenue.The railway strengthened the connection between the hinterland of Zhejiang Province and surrounding areas,also promoted the transportation and economic development of Zhejiang Province,and the spatial layout of the town has been changed.
