Chinese small towns are developing fast these years, together with residents'energy and heating demand. However, significant problems in heating systems have led to high energy consumption and severe pollutant emissions, which are heavily interfering residents'lives.Under the background of national clean heating policy in China,it is vital to study the specific clean heating roadmap for Chinese small towns.Based on statistic data, this paper firstly describes the characteristics of small towns from several perspectives. Then, combined with field investigation of 14 towns, this paper summarizes typical problems in heating systems, which are low-efficiency heating sources,low-efficiency distribution systems and poor building insulation. In heating demand side, through detailed measurement of 20 buildings,a comprehensive analysis of factors influencing heat consumption is presented. Then, based on the characteristics of different types of buildings, this paper puts forward economic affordable and technical feasible building renovation modes. From the case study of a small town,it is found that great energy saving potential can be achieved. On the other hand,in supply side, this paper presents the detailed distribution of clean heating resources at district/county level and related discussion on their feasibility for heating.Furthermore,a detailed mapping of clean heating resources to demand for Chinese towns is conducted.According to the functional development of towns and their clean heating resources, this paper classifies the Northern part into 6 regions and discusses the clean heating roadmap separately. Finally, this paper forecasts the future heating demand in year 2025 and 2035.Several heating roadmaps for Chinese towns are compared and discussed in terms of energy consumption, economic profile and pollutant emission. It is found that the roadmap that combines renovation in both heating sources and end-use buildings could achieve great energy saving potential with same expenditure as reference roadmap. In the end,the key features and techniques in the proposed roadmap are summarized. It is expected that the average primary energy consumption for Chinese small towns could be reduced to 7.5 kgce/m~2,which is greatly lower than current level 18.5 kgce/m~2.The results in this paper could provide useful suggestions for clean heating development of Chinese small towns.
