Study On The Impact Of INGOs On The Behavior Of Chinese Enterprises In Myanmar Energy Industry

As an important participant of China's “Belt and Road” initiative,Myanmar continues to deepen the development strategy and join hands in building the Sino Burma destiny community with China.Over the years,Chinese-funded enterprises have invested mainly in energy industry in Myanmar with large-scale hydropower,oil and gas projects,etc.These projects will inevitably arise problems like human intervention in the natural ecological environment,relocation and resettlement of residents along the project,and the impact on the environment and social risks is far greater than other traditional construction projects.Meanwhile,International non-governmental organizations(INGOs)have developed rapidly in Myanmar recent years.On the grounds of "environmental protection","human rights" and "poverty alleviation",INGOs have constantly influence public attitude on Chinese funded projects on the issue of corporate social responsibility implementation,which finally hinder the implementation of Chinese funded projects in Myanmar's energy industry.Thus,the adjustment of the behavior of China-fundedenterprises is urgent.Based on the current investment situation of Chinese enterprises in Myanmar's energy industry and the development status of international NGOs in Myanmar,this paper focuses on the impact of these INGOs on the behavior of Chinese enterprises in Myanmar.A questionnaire on the impact of international NGOs on corporate behavior was issued,and an expert interview was conducted with the project leader of Chinese funded projects in Myanmar and the Chinese officials in Myanmar on the specific behavior of INGOs and the impact on the enterprise.In addition,the cases of Letpadaung mining project shutdown and Myitsone Dam project are taken for empirical analysis.The paper finally found that the current influence of INGO in Myanmar on Chinese enterprises in Myanmar's energy industry is mainly reflected in influencing the government's relevant policies,influencing the corporate image,implanting Western standards,inlfuencing social attitude,etc.The influences caused by above factors lead to the corresponding adjustment of political behavior,investment behavior,social behavior,production behavior and decision-making behavior of enterprises.The corresponding solution is posed for both Chinese government,enterprises and Chinese NGOs.They should deeply study its operation mode,action concept and penetration mode,timely adjust enterprise behavior,accelerate the integration of Chinese NGOs into Myanmar society,and finally form a tripartite joint effort to optimize China Myanmar cooperation.As a supplement of INGO's research on the impact of China Myanmar economic cooperation,this paper refines the research perspective to the behavior of Chinese enterprises in specific industries of Myanmar,which has important theoretical value and practical significance.
