With the advancement of urbanization, the road organization mode of "thin road network and wide road" and the construction of gated communities in large-scale have exposed many problems, such as: the urban traffic congestion, urban spatial differentiation, street space deactivation, uneven resource allocation and so on,which is no longer suitable for the current urban construction in China. In 2016,the State Council issued a policy document, proposing the concepts of "establishing the urban road layout mode of" narrow and dense road network "and" no closed residential area will be built in principle ",which means that the construction of dense road network and open residential area will become an important direction of urban construction in the future. However, the construction of open residential areas in China is still in its infancy, and there is no unified construction standard in China. At the same time, there are construction difficulties in residential safety, property rights, management mode and other aspects. The traffic congestion in Beijing is still very terrible, ranking first among the mega cities in China. And also, there are a large number of unit yards and closed residential areas in Beijing, which hinder the sustainable development of the city,so it is particularly urgent to explore the construction mode of open residential areas.Based on the conceptual integration of "dense road network" and "open residential area",this paper analyzes the construction mode of "open residential area" from the perspective of "dense road network".Starting from the overall planning mode and block unit layout mode of the residential area, using literature research, case study, comparative analysis and multi-disciplinary analysis, this paper attempts to summarize the common features and specific design methods of open residential pattern in Beijing, then explores the design strategy of open residential pattern under the "dense road network",so as to provide reference for the construction of open residential pattern in Beijing.First of all, this paper expounds the concepts of "dense road network" and "open residential area",defines the research scope, and summarizes the current states and progress at home and abroad.Secondly,it studies and defines the characteristics of open residential areas under the "dense road network",and expounds the relationship between it and blocks.Through the study on the development of residential pattern in Beijing,it is concluded that the process of residential pattern is from open – closed-open and the road organization process is from dense-sparse-dense road network. As well as,this paper emphasizes the necessity and trend of the current development of open residential pattern. From the level of openness, this paper summarizes three types of open residential areas, and focuses on five cases of open residential areas. From the six aspects of traffic organization, residential management, public supporting facilities, public landscape space, frontage boundary space and block unit layout, this paper summarizes and compares the characteristics of the open residential mode in Beijing. Finally, from the aspects of overall planning and block unit layout, the paper puts forward the design strategy of open residential construction in the future. In the 200 m × 150 m area, according to the Standard for Planning and Design of Urban Residential Areas(GB50180-2018),the neighborhood unit is designed, the neighborhood unit model is constructed, and the appropriate scale of the neighborhood unit is proposed. And from the perspective of urban sustainable development, land mixed development, overcoming construction difficulties,multi-agent demand and urban space publicity, the paper puts forward macro strategies for the construction of open residential areas in the future,in order to contribute to the construction of open settlements.
