As the area with the most complete memory and distinct features in the city, the historical urban area has witnessed the development process of the city, condensed the unique historical and cultural characteristics of the city, and can be regarded as the ‘business card' of the city.In recent years, under the guidance of relevant policies such as stock development and the 13 th Five-year Plan of the Bureau of cultural relics, the relevant research and practice of historical urban areas have reached a new climax. However,in the practical work, due to the lack of exploration of the internal laws of space and the coordination of protection and development balance, some historical urban areas have some problems, such as space fragmentation, function uniformity, cultural disappearance, ecological pollution damage and so on.In this context, how to avoid the ‘isolated phenomenon' of historical areas to achieve the overall protection, how to form the consideration of historical space, natural elements and social culture to highlight the regional characteristics, and how to balance the game between historical protection and modern development to achieve the sustainable inheritance are the realistic demands to be solved in the protection and inheritance of historical areas. This paper introduces the concept of spatial gene, integrates urban morphology and spatial development theory, takes the spatial characteristics with regional and diachronic stability in historical urban areas as the research subject, emphasizes the combination of spatial elements and their interaction with nature and culture, breaks through the protection of traditional representation forms and realizes the inheritance of deep spatial laws.Based on the logic and related research basis of biological genetics, this paper constructs the research path of spatial genes in historical urban areas.Through three steps of ‘identification, extraction, analysis, evaluation, protection and inheritance',this paper explores the internal law of historical urban space, analyzes the reasons for evolution and existing difficulties, and then puts forward strategies for future protection and inheritance. In this paper,Harbin is selected as the specific research object, and the affiliated area of the China East Railway, which can reflect the regional characteristics and early planning ideas of the city,is selected as the research scope.First of all,the morphological elements of urban space are identified and tested diachronically. On this basis, combined with urban structural features, four kinds of spatial genes with inheritance ability and value, namely ‘frame',‘axis',‘group'and ‘ecology',are logically extracted with ‘component element-combination relationship-Characterization character-evolution feature'.Secondly, the extracted spatial genes are analyzed and evaluated, that is,the dynamic mechanism of their evolution is analyzed to reveal the relationship between spatial expression and social culture;the material spatial ontology and social cognition are evaluated and the correlation between them is explored to find the main reasons for the current spatial gene concealment. In view of the material and social properties of spatial genes, combined with the analytic evaluation results, the spatial problems and social dilemmas that affect their expression are summarized. Finally,in view of the real existence dilemma of spatial genes and the spatial problems, the paper puts forward the material ontology protection scheme of various spatial genes and the connotation inheritance strategy to adapt to the social development;in view of the social dilemma,it puts forward the management mechanism of both hardness and softness from the perspective of planning implementation. It is expected to achieve scientific, integrated, sustainable and operable inheritance of spatial characteristics of historical urban areas.
