As an integrated work platform,Building Information Modeling(BIM)is supported by technology,process,organization and other components,all of which constitute the BIM ecosystem.Ecosystem theory proffers a new analytical lens for innovation literature and the value creation of BIM.Compared with developed countries,the application rate of BIM in China is relatively low and it is far from a self-renewal,self-organizing and efficient BIM ecosystem in spite of a series of policy supports.Although knowledge of the static structure and the dynamic evolution of BIM ecosystems is conducive to the building informatization,the current research has not yet reached a consensus on its structure,formation,operation and evolution,which has caused some trouble in the practice.Therefore,this paper attempts to fill the research gap and to make certain academic and social contributions in this field.First,combining industrial background and ecosystem theory,this study discusses the formation of BIM ecosystem,and elaborates the components and static structure.Next,this research analyzes the operation mechanism of BIM ecosystem by explaining the functions and cooperation of the elements,and analyzes its evolution mechanism by explaining the evolutionary conditions,dynamics and mechanism.Then,Vensim was adopted as a simulation tool to simulate the evolution of BIM ecosystem.At the micro level,Logistics model and Lotka-Volterra model was used to describe the population growth characteristics and interspecific relationships.At the macro level,based on the system dynamics,the evolution of BIM ecosystem in the short term is simulated in terms of technology,application and environment.Finally,this study conducts institutional analysis of BIM development.Drawing on the results,some policy suggestions was put forward for BIM development in ChinaThis research is a typical interdisciplinary subject.At the theoretical level,the static structure and dynamic evolution of the BIM ecosystem are analyzed;at the practical level,the research conclusions will help each participant to deeply understand their respective structural positions and advantages and disadvantages in the BIM ecosystem,so as to maximize the interests under the cooperation of the BIM platform;at the management level,it shows the formation mechanism and evolution rules of China's BIM ecosystem,which has certain significance for the transformation and upgrading of building informatization and policy design in China.
