St Joseph's Cathedral Church,a cathedral in Catholic Diocese of Tianjin,was initially built by Conrégarion de La Mission in August of 1913 and completed in 1916 in June.Listed as the “Tianjin Cultural Relics Protection Unit” in the 1990 s and identified as “National Excellent Modern Architecture” in the same year,St Joseph's Cathedral Church building imprinted with the historical deposits precipitation during the period of Tianjin as a colony manifests the material achievements of Catholicism missionary in Tianjin,as well as the a practical outcome of combining French architect's architectural concepts with the geo-culture of Tianjin.This paper carries out discussion on the architectural style and its origin of St Joseph's Cathedral Church.Firstly,by sorting out how Conrégarion de La Mission conducted missionary activities in Tianjin and how French Concession was built and developed,this paper rationalizes the historic evolution and construction motivation of St Joseph's Cathedral Church.Secondly,by reasoning the architect and the architectural practice of the church,analyzing the influence of Marseille Cathedral on the architectural style of St Joseph's Cathedral Church,this paper further explores the formation reasons for the architectural style of St Joseph's Cathedral Church.Thirdly,starting from the architectural body of St Joseph's Cathedral Church,this papery analyzes the architectural style of the building in details,compares St Joseph's Cathedral Church with Chinese modern Romanesque churches and French Marseille Cathedral,and summarizes the architectural style of St Joseph's Cathedral Church building.In the end,after fully understanding the complexity of the architectural style of St Joseph's Cathedral Church and the significance of its cultural fusion,this paper discussed general rules and deficiencies of the regional protective planning for St Joseph's Cathedral Church,and proposes the prospect of the protection and renewal of Chinese modern churches by taking St Joseph's Cathedral Church as the example.
