With the development of the modern era,the leading countries of the world have recognize that due to the increasingly shrinking rate of the land resources, their focus needs to be laid on exploiting maritime resources as an equal alternative. In this regard, the developed modern countries of the world have built substantial infrastructure to fully accrue the benefits which lay in the unexplored maritime sector considering that environmental sustainability is the fundamental part of this process which can be brought into account through efficient green supply chain management(GSCM).As a maritime nation,Pakistan has not been able to effectively exploit the sea and its resources.Decade of neglect in regards to the environmental sustainability as well as production growth has weakened the development of the maritime sector, which in turn hurt the economic growth of the country. While seaborne trade is the backbone of the Pakistan’s economy, the domestic shipping and shipbuilding industries are in disarray. Therefore,it is necessary to identify the main causes of the downfall of the maritime industry and the environmental sustainability performance measures required for maritime industry of Pakistan to meet the international standard.Firstly this thesis focused on the general environment of the maritime sector in Pakistan through PEST analysis.PEST analysis provides a detailed overview of the structure of concerned sector considering political, economic, social and technological segments. This helps to understand there is more room for improvement and which specific segment needs more improvement and how great the positive impact can be gained by that.Secondly, the Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP)which has helped to assess the options that best suits the understanding of the problem in developing green supply chain operation management in the maritime sector of Pakistan.AHP has also helped in identifying what the problems are and which one carries more weight and affects more than any others among those identified problems.PEST analysis and AHP have played an important role in identifying the problems and their intensity.Thirdly, this thesis also used SWOT analysis to provide a concise photograph of the strategic environment of the maritime sector in Pakistan by involving the case at hand and to hint towards clear strategic directions that should be pursued in order to achieve strategic might at the same time.SWOT strategy matrix has helped to overcome these problems and develop GSCM strategies in the maritime sector of Pakistan by using the strengths and opportunities of this sector and countering weaknesses and potential threats. The thesis finally has found that the influence of both internal and external factors such as political instability, terrorism and foreign investment is significant on the development of the environmentally sustainable maritime sector of Pakistan. The security issues are the biggest concern in the growing market of Pakistan while political instability is also major issues of the slow growth of the maritime industry. Therefore, focusing on the security and political stability of maritime sector in Pakistan and creating more opportunities for foreign investors through attractive policies of doing business are suggested to overcome these problems. This paper can be useful to develop GSCM in the maritime sector of Pakistan through Ministry of Maritime Affairs.
