China's accelerating urbanization is increasingly connecting satellite cities and the central urban areas. As a rapid, convenient and environment friendly rail transit mode which connects the satellite city and the central city, the urban rapid rail transit is gradually implemented into Chinas' cities. In order to improve the quality of transition between urban centers and peripheral groups, ensure reasonable commuting time, and improve the network's operational efficiency,it's necessary to connect urban rapid rail transit and subway. The connection mode between urban rapid rail transit and subway is mainly divided into transfer connection and through operation. While the demand of passenger flow between central cities and satellite cities is continuously increasing, dysfunctional connection strategies are leading to line congestions due to excessive transfer pressure and in consequence causing significant costs. The development of urban rapid rail transit in China is progressing relatively slowly and only a few cities operate rail transit with the function of urban rapid rail transit. The connection mode between urban rapid rail transit and subway in China is mainly realized through transfer mode and lacking in practical experience of through operation.Existing research focuses on the qualitative comparison between connection modes of urban rapid rail transit and subway. However, the selection of the connection mode needs to be quantified and a comprehensive evaluation and comparison involving multiple factors is crucial. This paper investigates on the connection mode between subway and rapid rail transit. The evaluation and selection of the connection mode according to the specific passenger flow characteristics is the research objective.A set of evaluations and comparison schemes between subway and urban rapid rail transit are introduced which are based on the principle of utility functions. As a result,a tool for the selection of the connection mode in the rail transit planning process is developed. The main research contents are as follows:1.The development of the rapid rail transit, subway, and the connection mode between the two systems in China and in foreign countries is investigated, and the current trends and shortcomings are introduced.2.The technical conditions for making the case of through operation possible are analyzed from six aspects including the rail type, gauge standard, the limit standard, the through operation station layout, the signal system compatibility and the power supply system compatibility. The passenger flow conditions of making choice are analyzed through the passenger flow demand and the passenger flow intensity3.The factors affecting the selection of the connection mode are analyzed quantitatively. Therefore, the advantages and disadvantages of the through operation mode are investigated. All factors are classified and merged, and the connection mode evaluation indicators are derived, including the total travel time of passengers, the total number of passenger transfer time, the construction cost, the operational cost and the operation management complexity.4.An evaluation model of the connection mode between subway and urban rapid rail transit is introduced.Firstly, the factors are standardized and integrated into a multipleattribute utility function. Then, the weight for each factor is derived by solving indifferent equations describing trade-offs.Finally,a total utility value of each connection plan is obtained by this function.5.Three cases of traffic flow between subway and urban rapid rail transit were designed representing different characteristics of suburban to urban transitions(high, normal and low).By analyzing the passenger flow characteristics of each case, five connection plans which satisfy the passenger flow conditions were determined.Subsequently,a utility function is derived to evaluate and select the connection mode with the highest satisfaction. Finally, the evaluation model is validated.
