During Yongle period of Ming Dynasty, the dredging of the Shandong section of BeijingHangzhou Grand Canal had a great impact on the development of cities along the canal.Liaocheng,as the only prefectural city along the canal north of Huaihe River,is different from Linqing and Jining in terms of urban space expansion, urban landscape construction and the time of rapid urban economic development.By using the methods of historical literature analysis and comparative analysis, this paper analyses the development of various aspects of Liaocheng in different periods, and then obtains the logic of urban landscape construction and urban spatial growth in Liaocheng. This paper takes Liaocheng,a canal city in the Ming and Qing Dynasties,as the research object.Firstly,it makes a detailed analysis of its construction history, geographical location, social economy, cultural education, and then analyzes the background of the development of Liaocheng in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and the choice of the city site.Secondly, taking the dredging and silting of the canal as an important node of urban landscape construction, this paper divides the development of Liaocheng city into three periods, describes and analyses the material form and distribution characteristics of the leading elements of various urban landscape in Liaocheng in each period, and combs and analyses the economic development and population changes in each period. Before the canal dredged,Liaocheng was a local political stronghold. The urban landscape construction mainly revolves around the constructive elements serving the local rulers, with the feudal hierarchy as the main construction idea. From the aspect of urban construction,we can see that Liaocheng had a large number of shops at that time, and a large number of guild hall and Guan Yu Temples which had close business relations were built. In addition, cultural and educational facilities such as the academy, memorial archway,Kuixing Tower and Wenchang Palace have been added. The addition of cultural and educational buildings and facilities,as well as the important position occupying the urban space, show that the phenomenon of "the status change of cultural and educational" appeared in Liaocheng at this time. Then, from the five elements of Kevin Lynch's urban design, the dynamic analysis of Liaocheng urban landscape elements in the Ming and Qing Dynasties was carried out,and the relationship between the landscape elements and the changes of the dominant elements of Liaocheng urban landscape with the dredging of the canal were obtained. Finally, comparing Liaocheng with the general prefectural city,we can see that the urban landscape construction and urban spatial layout within Liaocheng have certain similarities, the difference is the direction and size of the space expansion outside Liaocheng City;Compared with Linqing and Jining,Liaocheng has obvious differences in urban landscape construction, urban function, urban form and urban space expansion.
