Because of the traffic location advantage of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and the Weihe River,Linqing City’s economy developed rapidly during the Ming and Qing Dynasties,whcih is known as the “first terminal in the world”.Taking the Linqing in the Ming and Qing Dynasties as the research object,this study bases on the literature and urban maps scattered in the local chronicles.This paper takes the construction of Linqing urban space as the main line after the opening of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.It mainly analyzes the historical space construction of the city from the historical background of Linqing city development,the formation of macro-city spatial pattern and the micro-city spatial elements.First of all,this paper introduces the overall situation of Linqing in the Ming and Qing Dynasties and discusses the impact of the Grand Canal on the location and development of the city.It further examines the historical background of the policy of transport and social and economic environment,which reveals the innate advantages and strong external dynamics of urban space development in Linqing.Secondly,the article analyzes the formation process and internal motivation of the spatial pattern of Lincheng’s twin-city.Linqing City was Huitong Town in the Yuan Dynasty.In the early Ming Dynasty,the county moved northward.In the middle of the Ming Dynasty,the brick city was built.In the middle and late Ming Dynasty,the Tucheng was built,which formed the spatial pattern of the twin-city.This pattern has been retained to the Republic of China.In the construction of urban space,there are mainly three driving forces.The first is the national transportation system,which is mainly reflected in the impact on the location of brick city,the development of commercial space,and the construction of Tucheng.In the construction of urban space,there are mainly three driving forces.The first is the national canal system,which is mainly reflected in the impact on the site selection of brick city,the development base of commercial space,and the construction of Tucheng.The second is the local political system,which is mainly reflected in the fact that the construction of brick city is influenced by the traditional ritual thoughts;the third is the economic development of the city,which is mainly reflected in the expansion of commercial space and the shape of the Tucheng city wall.Furthermore,the article summarizes the characteristics and interrelationships of different spatial elements of the twin-city by analyzing the city wall system,city signs and landscapes,streets,important components and basic components.The construction of the brick city is influenced by the ritual system,while the Tucheng city wall is built according to local conditions;the city mark of the brick city is an important node that constitutes the central axis of the city.The mark of the earth city is the spatial reference point of canal along the coast.The streets of the brick city are grid-type,and the streets of the Tucheng are flexible.The important components of the twin-city also have different distributions.Basic unit of city(dwellings)is influenced by the culture of the north and the south which shows the architectural characteristics of the North-South integration.Finally,the article compares Linqing with other cities along the Grand Canal,Yangzhou and Liaocheng.The study summarizes the urban space construction in Linqing in the Ming and Qing Dynasties,and hopes to provide good research cases for the study of cities along the canal and cities in the north.
