With the development of modern cities, and the increase of urban housing construction under the context of limited land, the renovation of the old city has become a major theme of urban construction. In the last ten years of Chongqing, the renovation of the old residential community is mainly based on demolition and reconstruction.A large number of modern buildings and commercial plazas have emerged, becoming the commercial and economic center of the city, while the old residential communities have gradually disappeared.Chongqing's unit-based communities are one form of these disappearing old residential communities created by China's planned economy era. With the advent of the market economy, the planned economy and the unit system have gradually faded out of people's horizons.Under this context such communities have also suffered from inadequate management and maintenance, and aging issues. The public space of such old settlements can no longer meet the needs of elder residents, and even poses a certain safety hazard to the daily life of the elderly in the settlements. On one hand,in the initial stage of residential construction, public space was not considered as a whole system, resulting in chaotic system structure, low space utilization rate, and lack of supporting facilities. On the other hand, with the poor maintenance and renewal of the disintegration areas of some units, the quality of the public space roads in the residential areas and the quality of the supporting facilities are poor, resulting in potential safety hazards in space use. Therefore, this paper takes the old residential area in Chongqing as the research object, evaluatiing the safty of external public space for odler people in the residential area. The field investigation was carried out in Yuejin Village,Dadukou District,Chongqing City.Data collection and analysis were carried out from four parts: road traffic, public open space, landscape greening and service facilities. After this, evaluate and summary all the safety problems in the old residential units in Chongqing. Finally,in order to meet the older people's daily safety needs, design principles and strategies are proposed. The full text is divided into six chapters: The first chapter expresses the research background and significance of this research, summarizes the relevant research status, clarifies the content, objectives and research methods of the research, and finally puts forward the framework of this research. For the further discussion, the second chapter combines field research and literature analysis to analyze the basic characteristics of the elderly in the old unit system of Chongqing and the their safety needs;the third chapter combines theoretical research, the fuzzy comprehensive analytic hierarchy process(AHP)is used to construct the safety evaluation model for older people in the old unit system in Chongqing and the weight assignment and optimization. The fourth chapter uses the evaluation model to investigate the current situation and collect data, which lays a foundation for the design strategy below. The fifth chapter proposes the design principle to deal with current problems, and discuss design strategy from four levels: road traffic, public activity space, landscape greening and ancillary service facilities;the last chapter summarizes the main conclusions and innovation of the paper, highlighting the limitations of paper and needs further research..
