Based on the summary of John Willis Clark's life,library science thoughts and contributions to library science research,the objectives of this study are to expound the important significance and influence of John Willis Clark in the study of library science on library history and the application of textual research methods.Firstly,through the study of John Willis Clark by many scholars at home and abroad,it is found that only Fan Bingsi mentioned John Willis Clark's contribution to the study of the history of Library Science in China,and the current trend tends to be that most scholars pay more attention to the study of the Chicago School of Library Science in the United States.This paper makes a thorough analysis and systematic summary of John Willis Clark's library science thoughts and methods,so as to build a complete chain of western library science history and provide useful reference and follow for the study of Library Architecture History in China.The first part is a brief account of John Willis Clark's life(his academic family and his various research careers in his life),his academic career(his historic contribution to each stage of his career),and John Willis Clark's involvement in the history of Library architecture.By summarizing his uncle's manuscript,he completed the book,"Architectural History of Cambridge University and College",which aroused interest in the history of Library architecture;The second part summarizes John Willis Clark's academic achievements in Library Science in three aspects: library architecture history,library science research methods and his works on Library Architecture History(i.e."The Care of Books" and "Libraries in the Medieval and Renaissance Periods");The third part illustrates the influence of John Willis Clark on Library Science Research in China and the West,especially on the history of Library Science architecture.Finally,it is concluded that John Willis Clark has successfully applied the method of combining historical documents with on-site survey and mapping to the study of the architectural history of western libraries,providing a new research method and paradigm for the empirical research method of library science,which combines historical documents with historical relics."The care of books" presents the history of western library architecture for the first time in the history of library science in the form of systematic pictures and texts.It not only provides systematic and detailed contents for the history of library architecture,but also sets a glorious model for the study of library science history in later generations.
