With the rapid development of urbanization process, the number of libraries cities and universities is increasing rapidly. However,in architectural design link, design often starts from the aesthetic aspect, paying more attention to the form, but neglecting the light comfort of the reading space. In the design of library buildings, daylighting is an effective way to use natural light and improve the utilization of energy by using tall and centralized daylighting space. However,if natural light is not used properly,it will result in glare or dark problems. Therefore, how to effectively and rationally use natural lighting to create a comfortable and healthy light environment and improve reading space daylight performance have become a problem that can not be ignored in the design of library buildings. For the large and centralized reading space of the library, the rational shape design of the atrium can improve daylight performance and the visual comfort of the reading space, which is of great importance to the construction of the reading space light environment. The paper is divided into three parts.Firstly, the research analyzes the relevant concepts and determines the scope of the study, including evaluation methods of daylight comfort, the characteristics of tall and centralized reading space in severe cold areas, tall and centralized reading space atrium morphological classification, three levels of analysis of research topics, and then clear the characteristics of the study object and delimit the scope of research. After that, the research investigates the existing morphological parameters of tall and centralized reading space in libraries in severe cold regions, construct typical models and presents the parameterization daylight comfort simulation process of the space and test method of physical comfort simulation verification. Then the model was used to simulate the lighting amount, lighting uniformity and glare of the reading space in different atrium shapes, and the design hypothesis was put forward. After putting forward the hypothesis, artificial sky is applied to verify the hypothesis with scaled model. Finally,it compares the measured results with the simulation results, verify the hypothesis and propose the design strategies. The design strategy is guided by mean locations of the reading area, and puts forward design strategies of library atrium geometry in severe cold areas. If the main reading space is located at the bottom of atrium,we can set the plane proportion at 2.5 or the plane shape as a triangle.Increasing the inclination angle of the section will aggravate discomfort. If that is set at adjoint space, the application of inverted trapezoidal section in 22.5° ~30° will obviously enhance its effective lighting. The planar shapes approaching to square and circle have better light comfort in adjoint space.
