Along with the acceleration of urbanization in China, the changes of social economical configuration, and the reconstmction of the industry, the focus of the city's economical development has been shifted from the second industry to the third industry. Many former industrial factories and infrastructure, which were very memorable and culturally valuable, have been abandoned in the city.Although they occupy a great amount of land source, unfortunately they have been casted aside. They evident a city's development process, but what is going to happen to their future? On this historical stage,we must increase the emphasis orn the issues of sustainable development.Frequent construction does not only waste resources, but also impact our health and the environment;yet it is inefficient in solving social and economical problems. While more and more old industrial plants are idle and abandoned, old factory reuse has become an important issue in today's design industry;especially for the urban waterfront, efficient reuse of the old plants has become more meaningful.Shanghai is the birthplace of China's modern industry;a large number of industrial plants have been abandoned in the city center, various districts ana the countryside. However, their hypostatic value of usage, historical and cultural value, and ornamental value have endowed them with unique design concept and aesthetic value, which is very essential for our study of its sustainable design in cultural heritage and living space. With the opportunity to host the 2010 Shanghai World Expo,Shanghai reused and reconstructed many old industrial buildings along the Huangpu River.Huangpu Port Qinhuangdao Road Station Watergate is the part of the project. The writer was honored to chair the design and participate in the Watergate project throughout the entire implementation process. This article sorts and classifies old industry factory reuses based on interpreting the relevant application of construction theory in old buildings reconstruction from China and abroad, elaborates the position and value of construction concept in old buildings reconstruction,so as to point out direction for future old buildings reconstiruction. It explores design principles of old factory reuses, including design concept, space and fomi;it also specifies many technical measures, such as foundation, structure, facade and other architectural details. In addition, this paper explicates the design methods of the Waterfront project reconstruction in different perspectives.First,it discusses the design strategy of overall layout from urban planning perspective;then,it concludes with a comprehensive elaboration from the perspective of the monomer space design method, which includes conversion of the internal functions,re-shaping of the imagery, the secondary space design, and finally the features and design methods of the entire landscape. In short, this article presents this specific case, further exploring an operable method of such projects.By putting emphasis on the old building reusable values and their significance,it brings the public's attention to these old building reuse projects, which provides some reference and help to any other future projects.Manldnd in the process of growth and progress slowly began to focus on the spiritual world rather than material pursuit,to build successful reuse of old factory building. One can create a different kind of architectural space with authentic values, allowing time bursts out of its charm of the eras which can be the most effective strategy in prolongiBg the life of a building. Thus,it creates a social value as well as economical value.
