449 Dinghai Road is one of worker communities in Yangpu District,originally built in 1923 as dormitories of workers in former Japanese factory Yufeng Cotton Mill(now known as No.17 Cotton Mill of China).Still used as workers dormitories now,it has witnessed a lot of Shanghai,including the concession period,as well as founding of the people's Republic of China,transition from planned economy to market economy etc.As formally designed and built houses,449 Dinghai Road has experienced tiny renovations almost its life long,mostly conducted by the government,but informal renovation appeared in the last 30 years.Based on research,this article gives a systematic combing of living space renovation of worker community in 449 Dinghai Road.And it gives a detailed description of its renovation during each period,and analyzes the political,economic and social background of each renovation,and picks out informal renovation during last 30 years as selective analysis,including background and origin of informal renovation,distribution and characteristics of its form and function on the perspective of architecture,and summarizes types of informal renovation.And in reference of space production theory,residential morphology and daily life theory,from the residents of the material and the life of the community,the paper deeply analyzes social factors hiding behind different informal renovation types,including physical community life changes of residents,changes of population composition,and status changes of working class during the years.Through deep analysis on a practical case,starting with architecture type,the paper explores value and limit,predicament and outlet of informal renovation in old city districts in contemporary China from perspectives of architecture,social science,urban anthropology.
