Intercity passenger transportation system is an essential channel in urban external trip and precondition of social economy development.Recently, with the sustainable development of regional economic integration, intercity trips of residents are unprecedentedly raised. To satisfy urban external trips required by rapid economy growth, planning and construction theory about intercity transportation system should be improved and updated. One of the core component of traffic planning theory is the prediction of the sharing ratio of passenger flow of different transportation modes.Passengers' choice of transportation mode for external trips can directly decide flow of the transport channels and hubs,as well as affect the inner-city distribution of external trips. Therefore, the paper did a survey about the passengers' choosing process of the external trip modes and studied the process based on the consideration that a external trip includes both intercity travel and inner-city travel.Passengers' behavior of choosing trip modes is independent and random so that every single individual may make different choices of mode choosing. On the other hand, behavior of mode choosing is controllable and regular and it can be studied by analyzing the related factors. Thus disaggregate model is applied to explain the basic theory of trip mode choosing process. The paper introduced the conception of generalized-fee with numbering the factors of intercity vehicles like efficiency, rapidity, safety, comfort and punctuality.Meanwhile, factors of passenger attributes and travel characteristics,as well as their cross influence with vehicle attributes are considered in the adjusted model of vehicle utility function. The process of the method to predict intercity mode choice is conducted based on the data of Nanjing external trips.
