Recent years have witnessed the prosperous development of the Republic of China(ROC)style architecture across the country,which has resulted in the in-depth study into the ROC architectural culture among the experts and scholars.The buildings of ROC period have been famous for their diverse architectural features,abundant fa?ade forms,and delicate fa?ade elements,etc.and their unique artistic charm has aroused the interest of the author who went deep into the study of ROC style architecture.As the former core area of the ROC central government and the region boasting the largest number and most diverse types of ROC style residences and villas,Gulou District has been unique in both China and the whole world in terms of the large stock of architectural styles and structures of the residences and villas.They are the products of the combination of the Chinese and Western cultures.Currently,the focuses of research on ROC architecture among the experts and scholars have been on such aspects as the historical background and profile of ROC buildings,general classification of ROC architectural styles,ROC architects,The City Plan of Nanking,the protection of ROC buildings,and the classification of the architectural styles of ROC style residences and villas in Nanjing has been vague.In this article,the author adopted field research,date collection and such methods as comparison and induction,etc.on the study of fa?ade elements and styles of the buildings to conduct accurate classification of the architectural styles of ROC style residences and villas in Gulou District,Nanjing.This can offer valuable reference and lessons for the study of ROC buildings and protection and renovation of ROC historical buildings.The author profiles the research background of the topic and the development of ROC style buildings in Nanjing in the first and second chapter,and briefs the information of the architects and construction companies,culminating in the relevant statistical conclusion on the number of architects and construction companies at that time.The third chapter analyses the fa?ade elements in the Chinese,British,French,Spanish,Sino-foreign and modern architectural styles,to name just a few,which have exerted influences on the ROC architecture,and the author also carries out research by combining the schematic representations with the such methods as comparison and induction.In the fourth chapter,the author expounds on the features of fa?ade style of ROC residences and villas in the western style,Sino-foreign style and modernistic style through case studies and finalizes the chapter with brief conclusions and induction.We can classify the ROC style residences and villas by architectural styles through the analysis and research in the third and fourth chapters.In the fifth chapter,the author sets forth the heritage and application of the fa?ade elements and stylistic features of ROC buildings in the renovation of ROC historical buildings and simulation construction of ROC style buildings through examples from the two aspects of heritage and reference & fusion and innovation.At the same time,the author also briefly talks about the way of protecting and repairing historical buildings in the Republic of China and the practical significance and value to protect and repair historic buildings.In the last chapter,the author finalizes the research in the conclusion and summary,and suggests that we should learn to absorb the strong points of Chinese and Western architectural cultures when inheriting,protection and referring to the culture of historical buildings,before we can make better designs and creations and move with the changes of time.
