Abstract/Summary:
The development of industry in the Kyushu area can be traced back to the Meiji Restoration period. In 1887,the development of Chikuho Coal Mine became an opportunity for the development of Kyushu heavy industry. In 1901,the establishment of Hachiman Steel Corp in the Kyushu region, began to drive the development of the Kyushu area’s industry. Many iron and steel, chemical, ceramics, electric power enterprises set up factories in this area, and eventually forming the Kyushu industrial belt, one of the four major industrial belts in Japan. After entering 1970 s,the "heavy growth" industry supporting Kyushu’s economic development has gradually became a sunset industry, and has caused serious environmental pollution problems. The manufacturing industry in Kyushu was in urgent need of transformation and upgrading.Under this background,in 1970 s,marked by Nissan Motor Corporation’s investment in the construction of plants in Kanda Town,Fukuoka Prefecture,Kyushu, the automobile industry in Kyushu began to enter a period of rapid development. As of 2015,the production of cars in the Kyushu region reached 135 million units, accounting for 14.7% of the total output of Japan Automobile, making it one of the main domestic automobile producing areas in japan. This article mainly studies the development of auto industry clusters in Japan’s Kyushu region based on the basic theory of industrial clusters.Based on the time, space division, and experience summary of the development of Japan’s auto industry clusters, this paper introduces the development process of the auto industry clusters in the Kyushu region, the measures to promote the development of automobile industry clusters and the development of major auto companies in various counties of the Kyushu region. This paper measures the degree of automobile industry clusters in Kyushu by using location entropy and Herfindahl index, and analyzes its competitiveness by the use of Porter’s “diamond model”.Finally, combined with the experience and lessons from the development of automobile industry clusters in Japan and Japan Kyushu region, this paper summarizes its enlightenment to China automobile industry clusters development.
