The Archetype Of Back Street Space And Its Modern Application Instanced By Zhonghua District In Xiamen

In the context of globalization,the urban morphology dominated by political and economic forces is increasingly converging,and many spaces with rich regional features are disappearing,which has posed great challenges to the integrity of urban life,urban fabrics,and consequently to social problems.By contrast,the traditional street space is a result of the accumulated wisdom of the predecessors.Therefore,by virtue of its flexible planning,suitable scale and free expressions of "Sense of Place",the traditional street space is still bursting with strong vitality today.The Back Street Space is an important part of the urban road system.In this paper,it is defined as a collection of spaces,which refers to the level of sub-districts located within the area.From the perspective of archetype,the space morphology of Back Street instanced by Zhonghua District in Xiamen is explored in this paper.By analyzing and extracting its spatial types,the paper finds out the essential cause of this type of space,i.e.space archetype,in order to apply it to urban design projects in the future.The paper consists of six chapters.The first and second chapters are basic researches.Based on the clarification of relevant concepts and analyses of outstanding cases,the third chapter studies the status of the Back Street space in Zhonghua District in Xiamen,from vertical and horizontal dimensions.By aid of historical documents,the author explores the evolution of the street space in Zhonghua District in Xiamen.Combined with the "five elements of the city image" put forward by Kevin Lynch,the author has conducted on-site research on the street space of the Zhonghua District in Xiamen.The fourth chapter is at the core of the paper.With the guidance of system theory,through the four levels of "system-structure-relationship-elements",the author employs typology method to analyze and research the Back Street space archetype and its characteristics.Finally,the core conclusions are drawn as follows.Featured by spontaneity,randomness,occasionality,living functionality and mixed performability,Back Street space in Zhonghua District in Xiamen,a superposition of multiple systems is closely related with top-down government control and bottom-up spontaneous constructon.The fifth chapter is an interpretative demonstration.Combined with the previous conclusions,the author puts forward the modern application principles and strategies of the Back Street space archetype and reaches the final concluhison of the paper-In the process of urban renewal,when it comes to planning model,the government should take the lead and offer incentives for residents to encourage participation.In terms of the overall design,the designers should grasp the system's diversity,dynamics,and create a multi-level space with clear structure,diverse relations,and multiple elements.The sixth chapter is a summary chapter of the full text,which summarizes the conclusions of the paper and clarifies the limitations and deficiencies in the research to facilitate further research and discussion in the academic field.The main inno-vation of this paper is to conduct a hierarchical research on the Back Street space in Zhonghua District in Xiamen by means of typological methods,and to sort out the spatial archetypes of the Back Street space,such as its causes and essential characteristics,in order to apply it to urban renewal.
