In recent years,China has attached great importance to the development of vocational education, and vigorously promote the reform of vocational education, advocate the concept of lifelong education, hoping to cultivate innovative talents adopting to variable social needs and having a certain degree of professional skills. The development of vocational education will inevitably bring the expansion of vocational schools with gradual beginning of vocational school building renovation, expansion, demolition and other work. When designing the construction of a vocational school,an architect needs a theory to guide own design, making it reasonable and reliable. The paper aims to guide the architectural design of vocational schools by means of the famous architect architect Herman Hertzberg’s "Poly-valence" Space Theory to better shape the architectural space of vocational schools and finally apply this theory to concrete construction practice of vocational schools. The paper is expected to explore the realizing possibility of "Poly-valence" in the construction space of vocational schools, and the realizing strategies and methods, providing a new thinking way and designing means.Directing at the above-mentioned two problems, the paper studies from two aspects: on the one hand, launching the Herman Hertzberg’s "poly-valent" space theory research, especially the concrete embodiment in Hertzberg designed school building’s "poly-valent";On the other hand, combined with the cases of theories and design, the inclusive structure to stimulate and accommodate the spatial diversity and the strategies and methods to achieve this structure are explored. The paper includes five chapters. The first chapter is mainly about the general introduction of the application of "poly-valent" space theory to the study of vocational school buildings, explaining the background of the study subject, the domestic and overseas research conditions at present, the focus of research content, the specific research methods and research significance and innovation. The second chapter is mainly to introduce the basic concept and the forming process of the "poly-valent" space theory, and the general characteristics, spatial problems and realistic significance of the application of "poly-valent" space theory in vocational school constructions. The third chapter is mainly about how to improve the adaptability of vocational school space through the "poly-valent" space theory and put forward corresponding design strategies from three aspects: structure, space and form. The fourth chapter is mainly about how to promote the social interaction of the architectural space in vocational schools through the "poly-valent" space theory from three aspects of spatial scale, spatial attribution and spatial interface, then putting forward corresponding design methods. The fifth chapter mainly uses the above summary strategies to make the greatest possible application to the design practice of a specific vocational school building, and realizes the "poly-valent" space in the design practice, and makes the summary and prospect of design practice.
