Analysis Of Conception And Works Of School Designs By Herman Hertzberger

Herman Hertzberger plays key role in the history of architecture in Netherland and even inthe world. He is among one of important members of Netherland’s structuralist architecturesect following Aldo van Eyck, some projects such as Centraal Beheer office buildingmade widespread influence worldwide. He is involved in various fields of architecture designall his life. including industry building,office building,school,private house,large-scalepublic building,residential planning, urban design and so on.In China we know about Herman Hertzberger though his famous work Centraal Beheeroffice building and then his series《Lessons for students in Architecure》.However few peopleknow that most successful work of Herman Hertzberger is school design.In50years since1960, Herman Hertzberger designed29schools among which25are completed and most ofthem are in Netherland.His school design shows humanistic concern and attaches importanceto open space and social space. His ideas made far-reachin impact to eduational architecturein Netherland even in Europe.Herman Hertzberger is not only a famous architect but also an excellent teacher. He isinvolved in educational industry for30years since1965. In1989,he established a famousarchitecture educational institute Berlage Institute of Design and trained many famousarchitects in the world.This paper starts with growing background and professional experience of HermanHertzberger(including architecture industry and educational industry) and then study theforming background of school design concept——architectural concept,sociology idea andeducational concept and then introduce and analyse his design concept for school andfinally summarize and analyze his design language. This paper strives to introduce andanalyze Herman Hertzberger’s concept and school project. Through knowing about projectsand concepts of this famous archtiect who has important status in architecture field inNetherland,we aim to broaden school design concept in China and provide examples toimprove quality of school design even in educational field.
