The village of a country represents the eternal and noble spiritual qualities of this country. However,in the past ten years,an average of more than 300 villages disappeared each day in China.Due to rapid industrialization and urbanization,a large number of young and middle-aged people have gathered in cities and towns. Some traditional villages have become “hollow villages” where only old people and children have stayed.Even without the government's initiative to dismantle the buildings, most of the wood structures in Chinese villages will collapse on their own soon after their vacancy. With the development of new urbanization in the country, the emphasis on traditional villages has gradually increased. From the mention of the "rural culture" in 2013 to The Nineteenth National Congress of the "Country Revitalization Strategy" proposed in 2018,how to better protect and develop traditional villages and solve the existing problems of traditional villages has become an important topic. At the same time, the depression in traditional villages has various reasons such as social structure, brain drain, and economic structure, and the simple planning of traditional villages does not fundamentally save traditional villages. Therefore, the revival of traditional villages requires a complete and practical theoretical system to provide more theoretical supports and experiences. The scope of this study is the traditional villages in the suburbs of Beijing.Through the research on existing literature, cases, viewpoints, and theories, and the classification, development status, and characteristics of traditional villages in the suburbs of Beijing are summarized, then put forward the relevant renewal strategies for traditional villages in the suburbs of Beijing.Try to rejuvenate and update traditional villages through the guidance of catalyst theory, and protect the cultural value, ecological value, economic value and life value of traditional villages. This paper is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the origin of the research of the paper, defines the scope of the study, and explains the main concepts. Then it describes the domestic and foreign research status of traditional village renewal and catalyst effect the two fields, clarifies the research methods in the process of thesis writing, and finally reveals the outline framework of the paper. The second chapter is related to theoretical research on urban catalysis theory and traditional village renewal,in-depth understanding of the catalytic effect, then analyzes the deep-seated dilemma of traditional villages, and cites the applicability and feasibility of catalyzing the introduction of the catalytic effect into traditional villages, and through the case analysis, find the theoretical application of the catalytic effect. In the theoretical application, updated catalyst principles, catalyst elements, catalyst application angles, catalytic application mechanism strategies, and catalyst targets are clearly proposed. The third chapter introduced the general situation of the traditional villages in the suburbs of Beijing and analyzed the current situation of traditional villages in the suburbs of Beijing, including the general classification and pattern characteristics of traditional villages in the suburbs of Beijing, further points out the current development status and problems faced by traditional villages in the outskirts of Beijing. The fourth chapter is the key chapter of this paper.Based on the catalytic effect, combined with the application strategy of catalyst theory, such as building a catalyst point, shaping a catalyst medium, and sustaining a catalytic effect,a strategy for renewal of traditional villages in the suburbs of Beijing is proposed. From the two aspects of the creation of material form catalysts and the strengthening of non-material form catalysts, the traditional villages' renewal strategies were specifically launched.Emphasizing that without demolition and construction, and without changing the original form of the village, the traditional villages will be activated through a series of small actions on the design to reconstruct the old elements or introduce new elements. The fifth chapter concludes with a practical exploration of the above theoretical system, taking the design of the update project of Shuiyu Village in Fangshan District of the suburbs of Beijing as an example. The traditional villages in the Beijing suburbs are part of Beijing's rich history and culture and have rich architectural heritage. So,this paper intends to provide reference and inspiration for traditional villages in other regions by exploring the traditional villages in the suburbs of China in the perspective of catalytic effect.
