Aging population and serious empty nesters problems in China have brought about a series of crises and have also drawn public attention to the market of products that facilitate the elderly's independent living.Traveling is an essential part of the elderly's life. Therefore, walking aids that help the elderly travel with safety and stability have very broad prospects for design and production. This paper studies and sorts the information and literature related to ergonomics. It mainly uses research methods applied in ergonomics to classify the existing walking aids,to analyze their respective characteristics,to summarize the basic functions and user needs, and to make clear the role and principles of ergonomics applied in the elderly's products,so as to design the elderly mobility aids.In order to understand the expectations and feelings and needs of the existing walking aids of target and potential elderly users, this paper uses questionnaires and interviews to study the elderly of the age of over 60 to make sure their physical and psychological needs while traveling. The results obtained help to set the target users, target environment, and necessary functions of the walking aids. The dimensions of walking aids are obtained via physical bidding tests and prophase research of users.Ergonomic methodology that determines product types and percentiles is also applied to make sure the product types and percentiles of walking aids, and to point out the body dimensions needed in the elderly's walking aids. The design dimensions of walking aids are based on the body dimensions obtained before.Last section of the paper designs new functions including sitting mode,folding,self-adjustment,and downhill assistance and many others based on user needs, design targets and body and design dimensions. These functions satisfy the needs of the elderly who want to sit down and rest after walking, who want walking aids to be portable, and who want to adjust walking aids themselves. The design meets the actual needs of the elderly's daily life and provides assistance for the elderly who travel alone, which is of great importance for the research and development of the elderly's products.
