With the arrival of aging trend,the aging degree of some old residential areas in urban central area in our country is becoming more and more serious and the contradiction between supply and demand of the elder people is becoming increasingly acute.Researches of renewal for the elder people based on old residential areashas beenan important part of senior building theory.This research analyzed old persons' mental and physiological features based on studies and theories of the elderly and buildings for the elderly.The research also summarized the characteristics of current buildings,location,allocation plan,house type and functional structure,as well as pointed out some issues existed in these buildings such as low degree of recognition,lack of communication space and the lack of old facilities by studying the case of Shanghai workers' residential area.This research proposed that it was necessary to renew the living situation for the elderly including building easily identifiable sites,providing multilevel communication space,and offering various services.Furthermore,this research analyzed the influences of reformation which affected by buildings' size,space,structure and surrounding environment.Based on these,this research found out that replacement,stacking and filling could renew the living situation for the elderly on the substance and function level.And these methods also helped reproduce the community spirit and enhance residents' sense of belonging and identity through the continuation and the reconstruction.Compared with the new types of old-age facilities,this kind of renewal is easily to be accepted and be used widely,moreover,renewing is a more economical and effective solution to improving the living condition of the elderly.
