More and more gigantic structures and taller buildings come into being through the process of urbanization, which indeed has a negative effect on the protection of the unmovable cultural relics in China today. On the one hand, based on the principle that the city's history and characteristic should be protected, there is a growing public concern over the protection of the city's heritage. On the other hand, programs in the name of urban renewal and development, are expanding in an unprecedented scale and speed. It results in the gradual disappearance of precious urban cultural heritage.Apparently, heritage protection is suffering from miseries due to the process of marketization and urbanization. Therefore,it's a practical research to figure out the connection and contradiction between the urbanization and the protection.Through diverse research methods like field research, interviews, literature review, this thesis presents the “point-area” development of the protection, and the “area-point” disappearance of unmovable cultural relics in different stages of the city's development.Unlike previous studies, this thesis chooses a fresh research perspective including both institutional weaknesses and ur ban economic developing phases.Furthermore, this paper probes into the intrinsic links and the contradictions between the urban development mechanism and the protection of urban cultural heritage, aiming at offering inspirations and useful suggestions for the protection and development of the city's heritage in China.
