Spatial Morphology Evolution Of Hunan University Campus

In this study,the evolution on spatial form of Hunan University's campus since late Qing Dynasty was recoveried.It provides evidence of the modernization process of Chinese higher education.On the other hand,since the new century,the scale of Hunan University's campus has developed rapidly.Summarizing the historical spatial form is useful to understand the uniqueness of Hunan University's campus,and that will provide a basis for the future's organic growth of the campus.Throughout the development of Hunan University,it has been attached to the form of social structure of the State.Therefore its spatial form of campus presents stage jumping qualities in history.In this study,the time frame of this study is divided into five historical periods,which is based on major changes of Chinese higher education and specific events of Hunan University.Firstly,in each historical period,background,system and spatial form of Hunan University have been horizontally compared.On this basis,according to the time context of longitudinal development,it is found that university's system play a direct role in the spatial form of Hunan University's campus.Thus the evolution on spatial form of Hunan University's campus has been overall studied.We found that there is a very high degree of association between spatial form and university's system of Hunan University.The system of Hunan University can be summarized as four basic elements: knowledge-based,organizational structure,functions and spirit.Hunan University as a social organization,its four elements include university's fundamental property,internal structure,external relations and the history of education.And these four elements respectively act on featuring buildings,associating buildings,shaping campus and continuing cultural context.Based on the research of historical documents,this paper proposes a circulating model of four elements to analyse the spatial form of the campus of Hunan University.At the same time,this study suggests that institutional elements are not independent,there is a kind of annularity linkage between them.In addition,the ways of the four elements effect on the spatial form contain effecting one after another from "knowledge-based" and effecting all together.The circulating model of four elements can explain the internal regular pattern o f the evolution of spatial form of Hunan University's campus well.Also it applies to research of those universities which grew out of the old Chinese higher education from late Qing Dynasty.While for the future reconstruction and development of Hunan University'campus,it will help to protect the spaces' characteristics from different historical periods.Since the 21 st century,with the industrial revolution and social change forward,Hunan University has also undergone a major development by leaps and bounds.How to establish a new social identity in modern era and to form its own characteristics is an currently urgent problem of Hunan University.Based on the circulating model,in the future,for the better construction of Hunan University's campus,we should consider well what is the deep meaning of the the university system.This requires that in the future Educational Buildings' designing should serve subjects' development,and Buildings' associating should serve college construction.However,in the long historical development,Hunan University always based on the model of change by external influences.Especially Chinese universit ies are still under the centralized control,implement the responsibility system of the leadership of the committee and the student's centralized management model,which will make Chinese universities becoming the same in the system of structure,functions and so on.The functional area,the axis of symmetry,the ceremonial space and the boundary between campus and city will be long-term preservation.So the result will be that universities from different origin increasingly converge.For the construction of Hunan University'campus in the future,it must consider beyond the technical level and the national control.This requires Hunan Universit y generate its "spirit".Only in this way,the spatial form of different historical periods will not be aphasia and receive new life after suffering.
