There is still a big dispute between western marxists and non-marxists about whether Marx has ecological thought.Critics argue that Marx had no ecological ideology, while some scholars hold the opposite view, arguing that Marx always put nature at the forefront of his thoughts. As a representative of North American Ecological Marxism,Burkett's book "Marx and Nature" reconstructs Marx's ecological thoughts from Marx's historical materialism and labor theory of value. This paper adheres to the basic position and viewpoint of Marxism,by studying Burkett's Marx and nature, reading relevant western ecological marxist theoretical literature, and drawing on domestic and foreign scholars' research results on Burkett's ecological marxism and Marx and nature,by using the methods of literature research, historical analysis, theory and practice, from the perspective of Burkett's ecological marxism, the author makes an in-depth study of Marx's ecological thought and its practical significance. This paper examines the source of thought of “Marx and Nature”,which is divided into two parts: the actual reasons and the theoretical sources.Based on the deterioration of the ecological environment, the rise of green movements, and the urgent need to guide and practice ecological theory. And absorbed the Marxist materialist view of nature,Marx's labor theory of value and Lebowitz's primacy theory of human needs as its theoretical source. After that,Marx's ecological thoughts in the book are excavated and summarized into three aspects, namely, the connection between marxism and social ecology, the ecological connotation of Marx's value analysis and the ecology of constructing socialism. It points out that capital has the anti-ecological nature of natural and social conditions without compensation. It examines the dual environmental crisis of capitalism and proposes to establish a communist society based on the joint free production of workers. On the basis of dissecting analysis, this paper points out the important theoretical value of “Marx and Nature”.It promotes the innovation of Western Marxist ecological outlook, enriches the understanding of the anti-ecological nature of capitalism, highlights the significance of Marxism guiding ecological construction, and expands the academic understanding of Marx's view of nature. At the same time,it is proposed to realize social consumption justice, guide the cultivation of people's ecological responsibility concept, and improve the practice path of ecosystem, and provide practical reference for China's ecological civilization construction. However,we must also see the theoretical flaws in Marx and Nature, the existence of a pan-ecological interpretation of Marxism and the imbalance between normative and descriptive. We should dialectically combine it with China's basic national conditions to build a socialist ecological civilization with Chin ese characteristics.
