In recent years,China's urbanization has made substantial progress and has become an engine for economic growth. However, with the further development of the economy, the main contradiction of Chinese society has been transformed into the contradiction between the growing needs of the people and the unbalanced development. The contradiction between economic development and environmental demand has increasingly become the performance of the imbalance.Under the background of the community of human destiny,China's opening to the outside world has been further enhanced. The new urbanization and opening up to the outside world have become a new topic in the new era.Further opening up is the background of new urbanization and the new urbanization is also an inherent requirement for further opening up.Urbanization and industrialization go hand in hand, and “going out” has become an important path to undertake excess capacity, learn advanced technology, and promote industrial upgrading. As the main part of the “Going out”,OFDI has become a new development strategy for opening up to the outside world. After a comprehensive urbanization index, based on the perspectives of population and land, was proposed through using provincial panel data during the period 2003-2016.Firstly,from the dual perspectives of population and land, the comprehensive urbanization index system is constructed.Secondly, the relevant test of the existence of the comprehensive urbanization threshold of the research sample is made. And on this basis, the sample interval is divided according to the comprehensive urbanization threshold. Finally,a series of conduction paths of OFDI have been further verified through the mediating effects model, including the industry structure effect, trade structure effect and technology effect.In-depth discussion of the following questions: First, whether the provincial OFDI has a threshold effect on carbon emissions.Second, how does the interprovincial OFDI affect carbon emissions under different levels of urbanization.Third, how interprovincial OFDI affects carbon emissions through intermediaries, and how these pathways work under different urbanization thresholds. The results show that: Increasing OFDI will lead to the obvious growth of carbon emission no matter at which urbanization stage, while it appeared a reversed “U” feature that this force rise and then fall when from the primary-level to moderate-level and from the moderate-level to the high-level urbanization stage. The conduction paths of mediating effects of industrial structure, trade structure and technology have significant differences in the primary-level,moderate-level and high-level urbanization stages.
