At present, the focus of the world economy has been transferred to the urban agglomerations. And China's urbanization is on the stage of rapid development, where urban agglomeration is also playing a key role.Internal economic differences in urban agglomerations has also become a hot issue in academic research. However, the existing researches on economic differences of urban agglomerations mainly make the analysis from the point of social and economic indicators, which ignores the key role ecological economic theory playing in the sustainable development of urban agglomerations. In April 2015,the National Development and Reform Commission issued the development plan of urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and made a clear direction for the development. In January 2016,the development forum for the Yangtze River economic zone proposed to promote its"green development".As one of the three crossing-zone urban agglomerations of the Yangtze River economic zone, urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River plays a very important strategic role and it is necessary for it to put"green development" into effect. Therefore, this paper attempts to explore the relationship between the economy and the ecology of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River from the perspective of economic development and consumption of resources and environment, hoping to provide reference for sustainable and healthy development for the urban agglomeration.Based on the ecological economic theory, sustainable development theory and regional development theory, after defining the concept of economic development ecological costs, this paper respectively establishes the comprehensive evaluation index system for economic development and ecological costs of urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and then this paper draw out their values of each year during 2001-2012 through principal component analysis.Secondly, this paper analyses the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics of economic development and ecological cost by means of variation coefficient,Theil index and spatial autocorrelation. The results show that the overall association of the 31 units turns out negative correlation in space, and the negative correlation is gradually weakening. So we can see that the overall economic differences are gradually narrowing. The main spatial agglomeration types contain significant HH,LL and LH in the period of 2001-2012.The phenomenon of spatial polarization is the main cause of regional economic differences. And the ecological cost spatial agglomeration mainly contains HH and LL,which shows a decrease in HH and an increase in LL.And that indicates that the control of ecological cost in urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is improving step by step. Then, the spatial matching pattern of economic development and ecological cost is discussed from the following aspects:the coupling co scheduling, the spatial autocorrelation of the two variables and the gravity center model. The results show that the overall coordination degree has improved greatly during the period of 2001-2012 and the level of coordination has improved a lot.The correlation analysis of the two variables show that they has an experience from LL to HH and then to HL which indicates that the economic development and ecological cost in the region has experienced the transition from LL to HH,further development to HL and the economic development mode has been constantly improved. This paper finds that the distance of the two centers of gravity has been narrowed gradually through the compare of their transition, which indicates that the two become more and more similar in the distribution and their coordination becomes better and better, too. In all,the main reason for the above phenomenon concludes the regional economic development policy and regional development basis. Finally, this paper puts forward some suggestions about changing the mode of economy growth and promoting regional coordinated development in urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River from the aspects of the economic development and ecological protection, which aims to provide a useful reference for the healthy development of the economy in urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River.
