Yohji Yamamoto is a Japanese designer who enter the Paris fashion design industry in the 1980 s.His design attracted much attention with the wide dark style,which also impacted the western skinny colourful style.His design made woman's beautiful bodyline invisible but more attractive.Because of the skilful use of black in his works,black became the representative colour of Yohji Yamamoto,and people started to call him "The Poet of Black".His works included his thinking about society,fashion and beauty,which makes the invisible part,body,more attractive,and has philosophical significance.After collecting and analyzing his works and books,it was found that Yohji Yamamoto's works presented a kind of beauty of darkness from Japanese tradition,which was mainly reflected in his technique and ideas."The Beauty of Darkness" was a viewpoint of beauty concluded from traditional Japanese buildings and art by Junichiro Iyamazaki,a Japanese litterateur.Yohji Yamamoto's works presented the beauty of darkness by covering the body with cloth and creating shadow using black,which could be the features of the beauty of darkness.This paper will study Yohji Yamamoto's works systematically from many different aspects such as his life experience,family and design style,analyze the beauty of darkness in his works and ideas of his design and finally conclude the study and try to find more possible methods to present ideas of designers.
