With the exhaustion of petroleum resources and the negative effect synthetic fiber brings to the environment,the demanding for natural fiber has been increasing during the recent years.However,the yield of cotton,flax,silk and wool are limited by the available land.It is urgent to find out a natural fiber.Calotropis gigantea is a weed growing in poor soil without requirements for fertilizers and pesticides.Therefore,the akund fiber adopted from calotropis gigantea will create considerable interest in the apparel industry due to its fine luster,good moisture absorption,renewable and pollution free feature.The basic properties of akund fiber could be concluded as follow:the average length is 34.18mm and the diameter is between 20μm~28μm.The longitudinal morphology appeared to be straight,similar to a cylinder while the morphology of cross section similar to a triangle.The fiber’s hollow degree reaches as high as 90%.In terms of the chemical composition,the cellulose content of akund is about 64%-66%and the lignin content is around 8%-9%.The breaking strength,the moisture regain is 4.45cN/dtex,11.9%,respectively.Besides,the chemical performance of akund is good.The spinning technology and the basic properties of akund/cotton blended yarn are studied..The akund is easy to break,easy to floating and the cohesion among fibers is very poor.Therefore the pretreatment is required to improve the spin ability of akund.Under the optimized pretreatment,the strength,the friction coefficient and the weight of akund could increases by 7.07%,20%and 4.8%,respectively.Meanwhile,the relationship between carding procedure and the quality of akund fiber sliver aimed at optimizing the process of this new kind fiber on a flat top card is researched.The result shows that the best carding plan is setting licker-in speed,cylinder speed and doffer speed as 525 rpm,225 rpm and 12 rpm,respectively.With this carding parameters,the nep content of sliver could low to 95 neps/g and the SFC(<16mm)could low to 28%.The akund/cotton blended yarn exposed to have low strength values,low hairiness value(3mm)and good bulkiness.Meanwhile,the quantitative analysis of akund/cotton blended product based on micro projection is studied and the minimum sample size is calculated as 6 yarns or 1100 fibers.An additional finding is that the loss of akund fiber is bigger than cotton during spinning process.Moreover,the properties of akund fabric are also researched.Experimental results show that the strength of woven fabric made by akund/cotton blended yarn are lower than pure cotton fabric while the bursting strength of knitting fabric made by akund/cotton blended yarn is higher.Besides,the woven fabric of akund exposed to have good wrinkle resistance,low abrasion resistance,good elasticity and fullness.On the other hand,the knitting fabric of akund shows special fabric style,good draping and warmth retention properties.
