Currently, crude oil is one of the important strategic resources in the world. Many factors, such as the unbalance of geographical distribution, the turbulence of regional situation, the aggravation of political barriers, have triggered trading countries to carry out long-distance transactions, middlemen seeking profiteering, and vicious competition among trading countries. As a result, the contradiction between supply and demand has intensified, and the unreasonable crude oil trade structure has become increasingly prominent. How to achieve the optimal distribution of crude oil between supply and demand countries has aroused widespread concern from governments and researchers around the world.Based on the yearly crude oil trading data from 2010 to 2016 and the geographical distances dataset, this paper constructs a global crude oil trade network based on complex network theory, and analyzes the topological features, including degree distribution, strength distribution and heterogeneity. In order to optimize the crude oil supply and demand structure and improve the stability of the system, this paper constructs an optimization model that aims at minimizing crude oil trade costs, and designs an algorithm to obtain the optimal solution.Complex network theory and meta-heuristic algorithm are applied to obtain the optimal configuration of the global crude oil trade system.Comparing with the pre-optimized trade network, the proposed model can effectively reduce the trade cost.By the minimum spanning tree analysis,it is revealed that the major oil-exporting countries occupy the core position in the optimized network, and play an important role.Further, the robustness analysis of the optimization result reveals that the major oil-exporting countries are more wisely in choosing trading partners, which is conducive to more stable trade relations. In this study, the optimal crude oil supply and demand configuration is obtained from a fresh perspective. The optimization method proposed can reduce trade costs significantly and avoid waste of resources, thereby improving the stability of the crude oil trading system. This work can help policymakers to formulate reasonable and effective trade strategies. In addition, the methodology and findings reported here demonstrate insights into understanding and optimizing the structure of crude oil trade network and may be applied in the investigation of optimization for other energy system structures.
