It takes long time for complex numbers to be broadly accepted. This creation has great significance to the development of mathematics itself,it also has been widely used in the field of physics, chemistry, science and technology. As a traditional and a major subject,it is closely related to the vectors and trigonometric functions and does have a positive effect on the training of the ability of mathematical thinking for students.By referring to the theory of SOLO classification theory, this paper is going to investigate the status that high school students are aware of complex numbers,to find out the law of their cognition and to analyze the factors influencing this kind of cognition.Different from our traditional evaluation system which mainly focuses on the results by carrying out lots of examinations, the theory of SOLO classification theory is willing to evaluate the learning quality for students. This paper firstly reviews a lot of related literature about the theory of SOLO classification theory and complex numbers, thus summarizes the requirement for complex numbers in "curriculum standard" and the related contents in national college entrance examination of different provinces and cities, finally designs the test paper and questionnaire.By focusing on testing, which includes the concept, the arithmetic and comprehensive application of complex numbers, together with interviews, which contains the history, meanings and usage of complex numbers, this paper investigates the cognition of complex numbers for senior students and realize their confusion of complex numbers.Research conclusion of this paper includes:1.The cognition of arithmetic is highest for students,Most of the students are in the level of association structure and the level of abstract expansion, some of them do not clearly understand the concept and still need to improve the ability of using them.2.Most students know little about the history of complex numbers and don't understand why we use complex numbers.3.There is no significant difference in the cognition of complex numbers for male and female students. The cognition for students in Grade 3 is better than those in Grade 1 and 2.4.The main factors that affect senior high school students' SOLO cognition include the contents in curriculum standard, teaching materials used, what college entrance examination requires, teachers and students themselves.Eventually, this paper will propose some suggestion based on the above conclusions.
