An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Energy Consumption And Economic Growth

Since the reform and opening up,China’s economy has experienced a rapid growth period.The current total economic output ranked second in the world But due to some structural problems in the economic growth model,compared with developed countries the quality of China’s economic growth still has a greater gap.As an important input factor in the production,the impact of energy on economic growth is also growing.A reasonable energy consumption can promote high-quality economic growth,while an unreasonable energy consumption may achieve it in a short term without improving its quality.This paper will compile the energy consumption and economic growth of the OECD countries in the past 35 years and use the method of literature analysis,comparative analysis and econometric analysis to analyze the relationship beteween energy consumption and economic growth of OECD countries.By comparing with China’s energy consumption path since the reform and opening up,we summed up the similarities and differences of China’s energy consumption and economic growth with other countries.Then from an industrial structure perspective,we concluded some possible ways in the new normal to improve economic growth quality and optimize industrial structure.The study found that China’s current consumption of coal played a certain role in the economic growth Therefore,during the process of industrial restructuring,we should not take a "one size fits all" attitude towards some high energy consumption industries Otherwise it will be counterproductive.Meanwhile,the effect of electricity consumption on the promotion of economic growth is not obvious.It mainly caused by unreasonable business distributionin the China’s tertiary industry.In the process of industrial restructuring,we should not only pay attention to the adjustment between three major industries,but also within each industry.For the above problems,this paper put forward the following policy recommendations:(1)change the mode of economic growth and optimize the industrial structure adjustment;(2)control the total energy consumption andimprove energy efficiency;(3)deepen new energy technologies and improve the energy consumption structure;(4)develop relevant environmental policies andimprove public’s awareness of environmental protection.
